How can safety professionals successfully transition to a new career?

I think that occupational safety experts' exposure to risks in different work environments and exposure to different people and environments provide very important opportunities for their professional development. En mi caso particular, mi especialidad es la Seguridad Física, dentro de mis competencias esta la Investigación, la elaboración de planes, manuales, protocolos; y todo lo que encierra la administración de CCTV, GPS, Control de accesos, armamento, equipos de seguridad armada guardias y custodios, posiciones fijas y posiciones móviles, etc. pero varios de estos elementos también son vitales en la Seguridad Ocupacional, existe una tenue linea entre ambas áreas y estas se complementan entre si. y todo lo anterior forma parte de la Gestión de Riesgos. considero que toda transición se vuelve exitosa cuando se encuentran elementos comunes entre una especialidad y otra, sobre todo cuando lo que haces te apasiona, la retroalimentación es importante.

As a QSE expert my preferred field is risk management, so when I aim for a new position I focus on aspects related to my technical profile at first and then those related to my administrative profile.

When I made a career change into safety I, first, began my research. I started reading everything that I could get my hands on. I first took a CPR class and the OSHA 10 hour class. Both gave me a broad outlay of the land. Second, I took the OSHA 30 hour, which gave me a little more depth of information. The most important part will be your willingness to learn. If you are willing to get out of your comfort zone and dedicate yourself to learning new skills then given enough time you can build your base of knowledge and become an effective contributing member of whatever you chose to do next with your career.

I have been continuously learning over 30 years. Knowledge and skills gained in the industry will keep you current. Keeping up to date with legislation and regulation in line with your particular industry will position you as a subject matter expert and this will make your application attractive to potential employers.

Anécdota, casi siempre escuche -No podrás, No puedes, Es imposible, No No No No No- Incluso en una ocasión solicite autorización para asistir a un Diplomado en Seguridad Ocupacional el cual por convenio interinstitucional mi empresa no debía desembolsar ningún pago; no obstante de desempe?arme en Seguridad Física Regional, ante mi insistencia mi jefe me dijo que Seguridad Física y Seguridad Ocupacional no tenían ninguna conexión por lo que me negó la autorización, siempre asistí por cuenta propia pero tuve que pagarlo y lo hice con mucho gusto. al final apoye a la persona responsable en Seguridad Ocupacional. Esa experiencia me faculto para poder desempe?arme en ambas áreas sin problema. Todos somos capaces, no se pierde intentando.

Interviews session will be the important step. Try to "sell" your value, by a conversation with the recruiter. You have to believe in your value and do not mind to explain your achievement to ensure the recruiter that you are the right person in the right position. One thing I have found helpful is to understanding the recruiter's needs and expectations. So that you can prepare what are the value that you need to "sell" to them, and the negotiations will follow.

Keeping up with the latest industry requirements help tremendously in successful transition. For example, in OSH, in depth and practical experience in relevant ISO standards is a good example; preferably if you have certifications. Proficient at popular and common risk assessment tools and incident investigation tools such as HAZOP and bow tie. Previous related work experience is also very helpful. Pienso que nadie lo esta, aun el entrevistador, he adquirido experiencia en cada entrevista que he asistido desde el 2021 a la fecha, muchas veces las preguntas coinciden demasiado, siempre les he dado seguimiento preguntando sobre el proceso de reclutamiento y selección por lo general diría que un 0.1% por ciento responde, en las entrevistas encontré resistencia por parte del entrevistador en brindar detalles sobre el salario, y beneficios, también encontré que existe desaprobación con mis respuestas a preguntas concretas como ?Que opinas de la prueba poligrafica? abiertamente me he manifestado en contra por no considerarla como prueba de valor para determinar inocencia o culpabilidad.

Minhas experiências no preparo para as entrevistas que já fiz sempre foram: conhecer a empresa e a atividade principal, com isto em mente e coletando informa??es com quem trabalha ou trabalhou nela buscar conciliar com os meus objetivos e assim conseguir ser o mais justa possível com o processo. Creio que aliar o que sabemos, o que podemos fazer e o que queremos ampliar em nós, faz com que a entrevista fique leve e a ansiedade de lugar a conversa franca e direta com quem fará a entrevista e espera de você sinceridade e quem fala a verdade n?o merece castigo n?o é? Tudo que você precisa é "manter a espinha ereta e o cora??o tranquilo" e ambos ganharam !! E pensar sempre haverá lugar no sol pra quem sabe onde quer chegar.

Listar los requerimientos de la empresa para seleccionar al profesional. 2. Responder con honestidad, ?tengo las competencias para ejecutar todas estas funciones? ?Cuáles no puedo ejecutar con facilidad y por qué? 3. ?Cuáles son las habilidades que te ayudan a ejecutar cada funciones y cuales necesitas potenciar para ejecutar las que no puedes? 4. Tener claro cuál es tu plan de estudio y el tiempo en que lo terminarás, te ayudará a demostrar compromiso para tus metas. 5. Investiga el mercado salarial y apunta el salario y los beneficios que esperas de la empresa. 6. Se honesta/o durante la entrevista.

En toda transición debes contar siempre con una propuesta, osea tener un Plan a seguir en tu nueva carrera. Se puede contar con un Plan a ser activado desde el día uno hasta tu primer a?o, con objetivos claros.

A la hora de gestionar tu transición, has de tener en cuenta ?Qué te ha motivado a dar el paso? y revisar la estrategia que has dise?ado para desarrollarte como profesional de la seguridad. Debes potenciar tus nuevas habilidades y credenciales adquiridas mediante la revisión, contribución o publicación de artículos relacionados con el área escogida como especialización. Es importante establecer una red de profesionales que te ayuden a consolidar los conocimientos y estar al día de lo que sucede en el mercado para seguir creciendo como profesional. Has de ser flexible y estar abierto a nuevos proyectos, ideas y preparado para el cambio.

At the end of the day it’s all about people. Anyone can recite the rules and policies, but not everyone can face down an angry scaffolder (who’s supervisor is pushing him the get the job done), and get said scaffolder onside. Work on becoming a good and believable communicator.

To transition successfully into a new career one must find a mentor in the target industry who can provide guidance and insights based on their own experiences. And by showcasing measurable achievements in previous role to demonstrate the impact and capabilities to get a new one.
