Technology and digital tools can help you and your students to identify relevant and authentic problems, research existing solutions, and set clear and measurable goals. For example, you can use online surveys, polls, or forums to collect data or feedback from stakeholders, or use digital mind maps, charts, or diagrams to brainstorm and organize ideas.

2 Design the process and the product

Another key step in PBL is to design the process and the product that students will follow and create to solve the problem or challenge. Technology and digital tools can help you and your students to plan, manage, and document the project, as well as to design, prototype, and test the product. Being able to communicate and collaborate easily is one of the best benefits of online tools. Various students can access and use the platforms at different times of day which helps reduce the need for scheduling of meetings. As collaboration takes place, it is very important for the digital tool used to track changes to a document or presentation the group is working on together. Online communication also makes it easier for the shy student to contribute, or the student filled with anxiety over school work. The negative side of this online interaction is if one or two students dominate in the chats. However, some students learn best by talking out what they are thinking. It is incumbent upon the educator to manage the interactions.

4 Reflect and evaluate

The final step in PBL is to reflect and evaluate the project process and product, as well as the learning and innovation that occurred. Technology and digital tools can help you and your students to collect, analyze, and present evidence of learning and innovation, as well as to identify strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement. For example, you can use online quizzes, rubrics, or self-assessment tools to measure learning outcomes, or use digital storytelling, infographics, or presentations to tell the story of the project.

Self-reflection is a critical and often overlooked step in the learning process. Especially for adults, this step needs the same attention as other steps. For some students opening up and describing their thought processes is hard and uncomfortable. In this instance, digital tools need to be ones not shared with the rest of the learning group. Sensitivity and privacy need to be considered for digital tools used for self-reflection. A personal digital journal can be created, and then passages shared with the teacher or evaluator as needed. Rubrics are probably one of the least effective self-assessment tools. To fully decide between the boxes of descriptors, one needs to be fully versed in the material which we don't expect from students.

Online tools can be great, but the tools used must be carefully selected for the group needs. One size fits all does not work well to have the best aides for learning. It is up to the educator to monitor a tools use and be flexible with the student group.
