How can project-based learning improve environmental science education?

Project based learning is an opportunity for students (at any level of education) to learn about science in a hands-on, interactive way. Ideally, project based learning takes students outside and introduces them to science as a trellis upon which to grow their innate curiosity. Science is just one way to answer questions. If the students are lucky enough to have an Indigenous knowledge keeper contributing to the outdoor learning, then their understanding of science - or story-telling, or art, or language/communication - will be vastly improved. For me, "project based" just means making learning more interesting by telling a story around the lesson that makes it fun to learn, and applicable to the lives of the learners.

Another advantage/benefit of PBL (Project-based Learning) is that it draws curiosity in students. And with curiosity comes discovery. Moreover, things students do with their hands tend to stick longer with them. They hardly forget compared to theoretical/abstract learning. This not only impart knowledge but also build passion in the subject area. The decision to be an environmental sustainability advocate/scientist is most likely to be influenced by a practical experience than a theoretical teaching.
