Teamwork is critical when it comes to securing the organization. We need to get away from the idea that the security team is able to secure the organization or applications without the help of outside teams. Security doesn't work in a vacuum. When the teams understand what each other is doing, how they work, and what their goals are, it creates a better system for working together. It makes it more efficient. It doesn't work when the security team picks a tool for the development team to use if the security team doesn't understand the development team's processes. Good collaboration helps remove the friction and creates a more positive environment.

Regular tabletop exercises between team members show confidence that the team is working towards the same goal, which bonds the team together and makes it a force moving forward. Transparency is another important factor so that everyone in the team can learn and grow from each other's mistakes.

In my experience, transparency is critical. We don't know what we don't know. Creating a mechanism for the teams to share their goals and processes makes working together much easier. It helps remove the guesswork of what each team is doing. This goes for both the IT teams and the Security teams. Regular communication reduces the risk of surprises that may have led one team down the wrong path.

For system engineers it is similar. You should understand your systems and secure configurations as well as what abnormal behavior looks like to help identify issues early.

It is also important for alerts or notifications to be sent to the appropriate team that can quickly triage them.
