How can a product vision statement improve customer satisfaction?

A strong product vision statement is a sentence that all members of the organization should be familiar with. It serves as a guiding North Star, directing our efforts and aligning the team around a common purpose. It makes it easier for product marketing managers to navigate the ship alongside the crew, from sales to customer success and through development. It is advisable not to frequently change the product vision statement, as it represents the "why" behind our business operations. Follow me for more product marketing tips ????

Today more than ever product vision needs to be clear , focused ,and directional. Fashion needs to create the “want” for newness & something different. I am convinced we will be on the verge of something great with new designers & direction for the coming year.

A good product vision statement reflects the reason why the product was created: to solve a specific customer problem. So, if the product was designed to solve a specific need and it does so, the product marketing messaging should reflect that. Some organizations will find a "vision statement" too much, but for more complex organizations, this is a necessary documentation step in the product management lifecycle.

A key product vision statement should be concise but also define the high level parameters of the market requirements. I have found it as key to help define a market need (market-driven design) vs. create a product and try to discover a market need after (engineering-drive design). Our goal is to solve not just a market need but to enhance the customer experience. We're not merely offering solutions; we're sculpting experiences that leave a lasting impression. A great product vision transcends the mundane, promising innovation that isn't just efficient but sparks a revolution in user engagement. Defining the vision effectively will help lead the team to a greater chance of success.

I found it key to start with customers needs. I often seen products leaders stating a vision that is not aligned with customers needs. Start by checking you audience needs, and build up to help resolving a customer needs. Seems obvious but often we forget it and become self centric.

A product vision statement represents 2 sides of the same coin : 1) internally, it aligns your organization and all functions towards delivery of the value proposition of your product to best possible extent 2) externally, it communicates to customers / consumers in clear & simple understandable terms what problems your product is addressing or solving, and/or how well does it alleviate and meet their needs (obvious as well as latent)

A product vision statement tells you: - why you are making the product in the first place - where do you want to take the product - what user segments will this product cater to - What kind of impact will the product have on its users. What benefits it will bring - it brings to light all three possibilities towards the product success - it gives clarity on broader milestones In the absence of a product vision statement, the product manager will be able to see only short term view of the product and align his thoughts and resources only accordingly The product vision statement brings a longer term view to his perspectives and thoughts which helps him further align his time and resources towards reaching the larger goal.

Product vision statement allows you to articulate value proposition to address customers problems and long term mission of product in an aspirational manner that portrays with confidence product goals and ensures a sense of meaning to customer. This vision statement informs every aspect of your strategy from product management to marketing crucially providing critical strategic direction.

It requires a clear understanding of the product’s purpose, target audience, and value proposition. - Identify the problem your product is solving and how it adds value to the customer. I'd recommend a continuous process of design and refine based on customer needs, customer behaviors, pain points and touch points. While defining the product vision, company needs to cover the wide spectrum from target market to distribution Channel. And then be ready to continually refine and optimize the statement based on the feedback received.

In my experience, we should do it in very simple 5 steps: 1?? Get what your customers want: Start by what are the things they need and want from your product? 2?? Show off your product's special touch: Why it’s different, what makes it the go-to choice for meeting their needs. 3?? Create a vision that pumps them up: Make it something that gets customers excited and feeling like they're part of something big. 4?? Tell them the good stuff: Talk about how it makes things better instead of just listing features. 5?? Keep it simple, keep it real: Speak their language. Keep your vision short, sweet, and easy to understand. And don't forget to listen, improve based on what your customers tell you, and that’s really very important :)

Think of a vision statement as a promise to your customers. Instead of just listing features, it paints a picture of how your product will make their lives better. Airbnb's vision doesn't just say "book vacation rentals," it whispers, "Feel at home anywhere, like you belong to a global community." Imagine the comfort and excitement that sparks! Similarly, Slack's vision isn't just "messaging app," but "ditch the email chains and work together seamlessly, happily." Can't you practically hear the sighs of relief? These inspiring statements go beyond features and connect with customers' deeper desires, building loyalty and satisfaction.

A gentle tap on a BMWs accelerator makes one feel the rush… the brand aptly puts is across as ‘joy is BMW’, another example from the segment, the gadgetry and the feel of an Audi’s cockpit seems like being inside an iron man suit.. and that’s the message they convey ‘vorsprung durch technik’ that translates to ‘progress through technology’. It’s amazing how two brands from the same country operating in the same segment are able to create such clear and distinctive products and communication that does justice. Anshuman Anand has cited great examples of Puma and Adidas… seems the Germans have cracked it. :)

An example of this is my previous company McDonalds where product vision statement was to serve delicious moments which brings smile on everyone’s face. It clearly implies that food which is tasty, appeals to the taste pallete and caters to everyone be it child, youngster, office goer or family. Clearly serves to customers and keep customer in the centre of entire strategy and vision.

If you don't already have a customer advisory board (CAB), consider starting one. There is no better group to test product vision statements with than your most critical customers. Clients that are willing to spend time with you collaboratively on a vision for the future are the best people to have weigh in on your vision. Does your vision statement read like a roadmap to the journey they feel they are on? If not, have them help you in real time.

1. Evangelize the product vision statement with stakeholders (internal and external) and build consensus. 2. Tie it your OKRs for measurement and evaluate if the vision covers your OKRs. 3. Lastly, measure to see how the product vision impacts throughput and customer interest. Worthy to check on engineering throughput, customer churn, NPS, CSAT and allied metrics to assess positive or negative impact and pivot accordingly.

Nothing beats A/B testing. Define a controlled group, engage some of the most experienced team members that have great listening skills, and test at any given time two versions in controlled sample groups. Watch carefully the reaction and responses. Do customers need clarification? If so the statement is flawed. If they understand and hardly react, the statement or offering have failed to communicate what's in it for the customer. If the customer shows some level of positive emotion and wants to know more, the statement has done it's job. In my eyes, everything should be done with a mission clarity. The mission of the statement is to entice the customer to want to know more, rather than being an all encompassing product description.

Vision breeds possibilities, but value defines you! A vision statement helps communicate your value proposition. A compelling product vision statement communicates the value that the product brings to the customers. When customers understand the purpose and value of the product, they are more likely to feel satisfied with their purchase and remain loyal to the brand. And, a strong product vision statement sets clear expectations for customers, enabling them to understand the product's direction and future enhancements. This clarity leads to better customer satisfaction as it reduces uncertainty and aligns customer expectations with the product's roadmap.
