In most of the product organisations, the promotions are basis impact. In Product R&D roles, the impact might be 2 to 3 year long. In such product roles it’s important to breakdown such long term projects to milestones and make the potential panel feel that the milte stones are aligned towards impact. This is easier said than done, hence it’s important to create a list of backable folks who can vouch for it.

I agree, with adding also the external factors and assessing the readiness of the market for your product also adding persona analysis and communicating with your target group of customers. Finally, there should be assessment for the full ecosystem.

In my experience, the sooner you know where you want to go, the sooner you need to realize that you need at least one mentor inside the company and one outside. No matter how good you are, you always need to seek for advise and learn how to navigate through people and layers to get yourself visible. Make sure you take time for this, don’t let it happen…make it happen!

Gather insights from the various perspectives, identify who you connect with best, and who you had the most ?aha!“ moments with. Once you find that person in one of coffee chats, you can mention to them that you’d like to ask if they would be open to be a mentor to you and give them the reasons why so they can also get insight into why you’re asking them and not someone else. With this method of having multiple mentor coffee chats you gain a lot of perspective but more importantly you get your name/personal brand out there, make it known what you are working towards, and why.

Typically when you volunteer and make an initiative that is totally different from your field, be ready for the challenges. You are a fighter, indeed!

To take responsibility shows management that you can be responsible and fulfill goals without need to be told so. The same thing with taking initiative.

One thing that works for me is to block focus times at reoccurring intervals in my calendar. This way I can be sure I have time set aside during my work day for my admin work, follow ups, projects, to go for a walk during the day, and much more. I also set my calendar to auto decline meetings after 6pm. This allows me to stay on top of my everyday tasks while still making progress on my additional responsibilities and extra curricula’s (work and more importantly personal). The workload is never less after you get a promotion. So, it’s even more important to learn how to protect your calendar, private time, and to say ?no“ now. You can’t continuously perform if you don’t allow yourself to recover regularly.

Do not give more than you can do for a long period of time. More you give, more it will be expected of you. Promotions are not everything.

Simon Sinek has the best answer I've ever seen for this matter. He says that you should never go to your manager and ask for a promotion. Because you wouldn't be giving them an option, it would be either, yes or not. Instead, be transparent and clear with your manager. If you want a promotion approach them and say -Hey, one of my career goals is keep progressing and I would love to work with you on a plan that could get me a promotion. How can I help the business to succeed while keep developing myself to get that promotion? I'm sure your manager will respond better to that approach and will work with you on a clear plan to achieve your goal.

One very important aspect I have learned through experience is to document your share of contributions. In short when commencing a project try to document the current state and why this project is being initiated. And as the project goes further towards completion, document the journey and how hurdles were overcome through your talents. As the project completes document the comparison of the initial and the finished state, along with the overall gains and expected benefits in the coming period. Finally, document how the project was able to reach the expected benefits. And what skills you used and or acquired to finish the project. Documentation would allow you to understand and present a solid case, in favor of your promotion.
