How can Product Managers prepare for a senior role?

Fortunately I have seen this transition very closely…as a PM it’s more like owning up things, managing stakeholders and getting things delivered. Whereas as Product Lead its leading from the front and manage the entire product life cycle. Product Heads in my opinion is creating an optics of your entire product team, he/she is the lens of the product. This entire transition needs sense of ownership and capability to deliver things in correct shape and form.

Professional growth starts by excelling in your current role. Consistently delivering quality work builds a reputation as a reliable problem solver. This foundation leads to tackling more complex challenges, blending creativity and technical skills. It's not just about climbing the career ladder, but a journey of continuous learning and personal development. Mastering present responsibilities prepares you for future advancement and contributes to organizational success. Growth is about excellence in the now.

The first step to prepare for a senior role is to assess your current skills, knowledge, and performance as a product manager. You need to identify your strengths and areas of improvement, and how they align with the expectations and requirements of a senior position. You can use frameworks such as the Product Management Skills Matrix or the Product Manager Competency Model to evaluate yourself and get feedback from others. You can also look at job descriptions, case studies, and interviews of senior product managers to understand what they do and what they need to know.

First and foremost: figure out if you really want it. Sure, the extra power and pay look great, but what about the extra hours, stress and the fact that you will be more removed from the places where the actual work is done. So talk to people who are where you want to be. Buy them lunch or drinks and find out if this is something that you would want to do. And ask yourself why you aren't really happy where you are. If that all ads up, then you can start crafting a plan.

The biggest difference between product managers and product management leaders is what they focus on. The more senior a PM becomes, the more they focus on company wide and market wide issues. A product manager will focus on a customer or a persons and a set of problems to solve. This is incredibly important to the day to day operations and growth of the product. A product leader will tie product level issues and goals back to company issues and goals.

While setting clear goals is crucial, too rigid a development plan may limit adaptability. In today's fast-paced tech world, being open to unexpected opportunities and learning paths might lead to more growth. It's about balancing structured planning with flexibility.

It’s great that you want to grow in your career. But you not only have to show the capability to do senior level work, but also share that you actually want a promotion. And then make a plan with your manager and skip. Everyone is willing to help you grow, you just have to create a plan to make sure there actually is a path to do so.

The single most important thing I've done to help progress my career in product leadership is to tie everything my product does back to the company goals. I don't focus just on my product and my team but rather how we all support where the entire company is going.

99% of the work is being a nice person and getting shit done. If that's not enough, you are in the wrong company. Get out as fast as you can!

Every aspect of the Product is tied to the Company’s goals and objectives. We try to manage the product from cost efficiency in its production stage with proper planning and forecast. We then use the product to represent the values of the company when we interact with customers in terms of quality and productivity. We then follow up the product performance with product support which also represents the company’s Aftermarket policy. In managing the different aspect of the product cycle, one begins to appreciate the leadership values needed for an organisation to succeed.

One helpful exercise is asking yourself—what is the most strategic and impactful thing you could be working on? For example, before my promotion to Senior PM at Udacity, in addition to executing and delivering short-term impact, I also started asking myself—what is the most impactful way for me to use my time? I learned about overall market trends, led user research, facilitated team-wide brainstorming sessions, drafted a vision and strategy for my area, mentored teammates transitioning to product roles, and sought resources to set my team up for success. In other words, I tried to define what being 'senior' meant to me, acted accordingly, and sought feedback from trusted mentors in the organization on how I can improve

Assess which of them you're easy to start with and start learning the harder ones. It is an ongoing and iterative process. Keep connecting with like-minded people, share your perspectives and gain their insights and suggestions, experiment with them and iterate.

To showcase value and impact as a product manager: Establish clear OKRs that measure product success and impact on business goals. Visualize key metrics and data to communicate product performance and value. Share the story of your product's impact, highlighting successes and challenges. Use data to demonstrate the product's contribution to revenue growth, customer satisfaction, or other key business objectives. Recognize and celebrate the achievements of your cross-functional team. Regularly present product updates and impact to leadership, investors, or customers. Showcase your product expertise and thought leadership at conferences and meetups. Share customer success stories and case studies to demonstrate product value.

DON’T focus on yourself too much. I’ve found that exceptional product managers, when asked to provide an example of how they made impact in their organisation, spend more time talking about the challenge, the target audience and the value rather than the specific feature they built and why it’s so great.

Share your expertise by writing articles, giving presentations, or participating in online discussions about product management. This helps establish your reputation as a thought leader and increases your visibility within the industry.

Few things make you look more generic than talking about yourself and your skillset. Speak instead about the products you worked on, the challenges you faced and the impact it had. Draw focus on the product journey, rather than the product itself. In that course, tie the journey and the impact to the goals of the organization and how your specific contributions helped move that ticker. Most importantly, INCLUDE reflection. At least on the physical product side, product managers are essentially the mini-CEO of their portfolio. They are singularly responsible across the disciplines, to understand customer needs and market dynamics, synthesize that into a product specification, working with engineering and manufacturing to develop that into a marketable product, and testing and verifying that the specification is met, then integrating with sales and marketing for a successful product launch. This experience on a smaller scale exercises all the skills required for subsequent executive responsibilities.

Senior PMs should prioritize initiatives that directly contribute to achieving the company's vision. This requires understanding the data that informs the "why" behind strategic goals and possessing the drive to address both the "why" and "when" of implementing those goals.
