How can Product Managers build trust and credibility with their team?

Credibility is an outcome of your deliverable and trust gets develop by maintaining that credibility. Joining as new PM , It is very difficult to ask for trsut from the team. Why would they listen to what you say as sprint goals etc... To build that- take 2,3 sprints and showcase that you understand customer need and you are aksing that in right priority from the team. Bring stakeholders to demo and when they praise you , your team will start building that trust. Another important aspect is - stay transparent with the team, if you do not know- say I do not know. Do not Pretend and fail.

I believe that building trust through communication starts with great transparency. By being open towards your team with roadmap, strategy, market trends and having clear and transparent conversations around those topics, you create a way to naturally catch the teams input, concerns and ideas. When putting the teams input in a greater context, it is much easier to connect it back to the tasks at hand, and why we need to prioritize the way we do. You might not take all input and concerns into consideration, but by adding some of them to the roadmap & plan, you build the trust needed to reach even more openness and transparency. And so the positives cycle continues.

Foster trust and credibility as a Product Manager by prioritizing clear and frequent communication. Share your product vision, goals, roadmap, and priorities, explaining the reasoning behind your decisions. In my experience, the best communication is: 1. simple 2. visual 3.?repeated often. State your message clearly in simple terms, using stories, examples and metaphors your team can relate to. Visuals - diagrams, charts, illustrations - stick in people's minds better than words alone. And share your message frequently through different channels - email, chat, meetings, documents - to ensure it sinks in across the organization. Share early, share often.

Building trust is a hard problem to solve, however, if your intent is right then it's very easy. Here are the few steps: 1. Be transparent about all aspects of your work because transparency helps in building trust 2. Build a personal relationship/repo with each of your team member 3. Give and get open feedback 4. Don't leave your team alone when something goes wrong 5. Be the leader and lead by example 6. Don't blame others for falure

One thing I have found helpful is when you collaborate and give power to your team, it makes a culture of new ideas and being creative. It shows that you believe in your team and trust them. Everyone feels a part of the team and it makes a positive environment. Working together and giving power is not just leading a team. it's like creating a group where each person's strengths help the whole team succeed.

Collaboration doesn't come with the intention of collaborating. It fundamentally comes with the intention and actions of helping anyone and most importantly, asking for help. Asking for help, psychologically, creates a state where the other person automatically feels good about you and has a positive feeling subconsciously. But this seeking help should be mindful and not every small thing should be asked. For eg. when you join as a new joiner, don't hesitate to ask genuinely for questions about getting to know the system. Thus it helps in building that first level of trust and positive interest for you.

The other way to build trust to beef up the competitive understanding & build the competitor's product intelligence muscle. The more & more as a PM you learn these aspects the more value you would add in the calls with different stakeholders. So you become the generalist master but also have a edge on certain area as a SME such as industry knowledge, competitor's landscape etc.

Every single person in this world likes to be appreciated and respected. Recognize your team in public. Recognize and celebrate wins of your Technical team (Developers, Designers, QAs) in front of Business and Executives, in front of Customers. Attribute the entire success to the team. If you have a budget for your cross-functional team, allocate it by going for lunch/dinner as a team or utilize it to give personalized gift cards to each team member. You will be able to personalize the gift card, if you have taken interest in each of your team member's life and understood what is important to each of them.

Show genuine care and understanding for your team members' needs and challenges. Listen attentively and provide support when needed.

As a mid level leaders in product, this might be the most challenging things. Because sometimes you are being pushed from the top, peer and stakeholder. So stay true to your value and what you committed so your team know that they can trust you in all situation

Be honest, reliable, and ethical in your interactions with your team. Lead by example and uphold high standards of conduct. Be open to admitting mistakes and learning from them. Avoid arrogance and be receptive to feedback and suggestions.

Something that I have done over past many years is, - Develop non work conversations, that means you would not just call or talk when it is about User story or backlog, talk in general. - Show empathy towards the hardship - do not be a dictator. You would build a relation and that will act as stepping stone for you to win trust.

The more you communicate the "why" behind decisions transparently and humbly, the more people will trust you, even if they disagree Listen sincerely too - communication is a two way street. Practice articulate, respectful, empathetic communication and it will become your secret superpower.

The best way for a product manager to establish trust and credibility within an org is to demonstrate an unwavering commitment to understanding and addressing customer's specific needs and challenges in detail. This involves not only a deep dive into identifying these pain points but also actively communicating internally and aligning the teams to collaboratively work towards solving them. Be emotional. Love the developed Features, love the Features yet to be developed. Love your team's discussions, love it when they disagree with you, love it when they agree with you. Love it when you ask and get an answer, love it when you don't get an answer and you'll have to do some digging.
