1 What are performance metrics?

Performance metrics are quantitative indicators that measure the quality, quantity, cost, or time of a process or system. They help you evaluate how well your process control meets your goals and standards, and identify areas for improvement or optimization. Some examples of performance metrics are throughput, yield, waste, cycle time, uptime, downtime, and energy consumption.

I remember a customer praising me for reducing 2 seconds the cycle to pack K-cups, from 200 per minute to 200 each 58 sec. According his numbers those 2 seconds were paying the salaries of each men in the floor. If this sounds impressive, check the downtime produced by loading materials, maintenance, cleaning and common problems. Metrics help you to decide if is a good investment to buy more reliable equipment, verify if an operator is efficient or if we have bottlenecks in a process. Performance metrics are feedback and you cannot improve a system without feedback.

There's an old adage "you can't manage what you can't measure". Performance measurement is often an afterthought (what about reporting!?), but should be "baked" into the overall strategy of any implementation or improvement effort. Ensuring that KPI's and KRI's are identified early, with a robust measurement plan is required. Obvious indicators don't always tell the whole story. Uncovering secondary, negative or proxy indicators can be of more use. For example, volumes moving through a process are an evident metric and can help prove out a business case, but don't speak to the quality of the system. A metric like "abandonment rate" that details where in the process drop-offs occur will uncover specific areas on which to improve.
