Durability is a factor in investigating a material's sustainability. Durability of the material must be considered (and tested, if possible) within the pavement system which it is going to be used. A pavement material cannot be sustainable, if it is not durable.

Another way to incorporate sustainability in pavements is to make use of asphalt emulsion based pavement preservation techniques that can be applied at ambient temperature or require less material. Such treatments extend the life of pavements and reduce the overall life cycle cost of the pavement.

We cannot consider smart pavements without also considering smart vehicles: automated control of passenger vehicles will restrict routine braking forces to within comfort thresholds while at the same time concentrating the trafficking wear more closely in narrower wheel tracks. Autonomous good vehicles will concentrate wear as they follow prescribed tracks. Smart vehicles will provide braking/acceleration heatmaps that can be input into risk models to confirm or contradict. Please do not look at one part of the vehicle/tyre/road interface in extremis as this will be to the detriment of all involved
