I have used various type of nano materials extensively in my PHD.. I have used carbon nanotubes to design super-capacitors with extremely high, industrial grade specific capacitance while remaining cost effective.. I have used 2-D materials and CNTs to design transistors with CNT interconnects which has very good response while it eliminated the problem of electro migration and needing of a barrier layer around copper interconnects.. One of the other project that I worked was designing solar cell with gold nano particles to improve the efficiency of solar cells.. Nano materials are a broad category of materials that has countless applications and no matter how much we invent, there will be more that we can do with it.

Imagine, you have a bad tooth that is so bad that it starts poisoning the rest of your body. Your doctor recommends the tooth to be removed. However, she adds, the current state of medicine doesn't allow us to take out just this one tooth. We need to take all your teeth out to save your life. It will be unbearable, but you will live. We can implant new teeth afterward. You might suffer from a painful period of adjustment but hopefully, everything goes well. This is how chemotherapy works– one of the most widely used cancer treatments at the moment. It kills not just cancer cells but many perfectly healthy cells as well. On the contrary, nanoparticles would deliver the deadly medicine to the cancer cells only not affecting any other cells.

Cancer diagnosis is always tricky as it requires taking a portion out of the tumor which could cause the spreading of cancer in the body. One of our project involved designing of ex vivo technique that uses a system designed using nano materials to analyze tumors using RAMAN spectrometer.. the spectra obtained from RAMAN spectrometer then could be analyzed between cancerous and benign tumor.. it also eliminates the chance of cancer spreading as it’s an ex vivo technique..

Selectivity is the key to safety of cancer medicines. Nanotechnology opens up more ways to achieve such selectivity, as nanomaterial properties are dependent on multiple physico-chemical factors-size, charge, hydrophobicity, etc. Still, it is hard to compete with nature (antibody-antigen, DNA hybridization...) in that area.
