1 Know your audience

It’s always important to do your due diligence before stepping into an interview. Find out as much as you can about the company, ie: their profitability, mission and value statement. Make sure it aligns with yours and make it part of the interview process. If possible find out who you will be interviewing with. If you can’t, then lean in and listen. Listen to their language and mimic it…both their vocal language and body language while still bringing your authenticity to the table.

2 Prepare your stories

As a motivational speaker, you know the power of stories to captivate and persuade your listeners. Stories can also help you showcase your achievements, skills, and personality in a memorable and authentic way. Instead of reciting your resume or giving generic answers, prepare some stories that demonstrate how you have overcome challenges, created impact, or learned valuable lessons in your previous roles or projects. Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure your stories and highlight your actions and outcomes. Make sure your stories are relevant, concise, and engaging.

3 Practice your delivery

Your delivery is as important as your content when it comes to making a good impression. You want to sound confident, enthusiastic, and professional, but not arrogant, rehearsed, or boring. Practice your answers and stories out loud, preferably with a friend or a coach who can give you feedback. Pay attention to your voice, body language, and eye contact. Use a clear and expressive voice, avoid filler words and vocal pauses, and modulate your pitch and pace. Use positive and open body language, such as smiling, nodding, and gesturing. Maintain eye contact with the interviewer, but don't stare or look away too often.

When practicing your speech, record yourself and then rewatch the video. To see where you can make improvements and what you did right. That will not only help you get better, but it will give you content that you can post and help drive traffic to where you're going to speak.

4 Show your passion

One of the qualities that employers look for in motivational speakers is passion. Passion is what drives you to pursue your goals, to learn new skills, and to share your message with others. Passion is also what makes you stand out from the crowd and connect with your audience. Show your passion for the role and the company by expressing your interest, enthusiasm, and curiosity. Explain why you want to work for them, what excites you about the opportunity, and what value you can bring to their team. Ask thoughtful and relevant questions that show you have done your homework and you are eager to learn more.

5 Follow up with gratitude

After the interview, don't forget to follow up with a thank you note. This is a simple but effective way to show your appreciation, professionalism, and interest. Send an email or a card to the interviewer within 24 hours of the interview. Thank them for their time and attention, restate your interest and fit for the role, and highlight one or two key points from the conversation. You can also include a link to your portfolio, website, or social media accounts where they can see more of your work and testimonials. Keep it brief, polite, and personalized.

Always send a thank you note within 24 hours after your interview to the person you spoke with. Let them know your genuine interest in being part of the team. Set yourself apart from the rest. Choose 1 or 2 things they stated that you align with your values.
