I think I understand the point but the wording here suggests it is always a more senior person mentoring a more junior person. I have been mentored by much more junior people on more than one occasion that have been experts in a specific area I'm looking to grow in. I believe you are saying the same thing and, if so, I suggest rewording a little bit or being more explicit.

As I look back on the hundreds of engineers I've hired, the one thing that has separated those that are elite from those that do well versus the rest of the pack is exceptional interpersonal skills. Of those, communication skills is hands down the most important. I think communication skills can advance careers (as you point out) but, perhaps more importantly, the lack of OUTSTANDING communication skills will at some point become a limiting factor.
