How can mentorship help you develop a global perspective in Strategy?

I have had the benefit of being mentored during the course of my MBA program at the University of Bath, where I flew from the U.S. to the U.K. once monthly to participate in coursework before lockdown. I enjoyed learning from my mentor who was strategically assigned to me because our worlds intersected at the crossroads of advertising while later working with charities. We formed a close bond which has lasted to this day. Having the cross-pollination of subject matter expertise, empathy, curiosity, encouragement, a listening ear does in fact inspire one to grow, learn and improve themselves as well as their skills and ultimately performance. After graduation, I was blessed to be asked to be a mentor to other MBA students who also benefited.

Development of a global perspective requires development of both professional and personal mindset. Mentorship plays a crucial role in cultivating a balanced professional and personal perspective. Mentorship provides invaluable insights into diverse markets, cultural nuances, geopolitical landscapes etc which helps a mentee in developing a professional mindset. A mentee gains exposure, through the mentor's life experiences, in areas such as different leadership styles, business practices and praciticing empathy. Mentorship offers a myriad of benefits which helps an individual nurture a continuous learning mindset, ensuring strategic agility and adaptability in an ever evolving global business landscape.

Mentoring provides invaluable insights and guidance, fostering a global perspective by exposing mentees to diverse experiences. Mentors, often seasoned professionals with international exposure, offer firsthand knowledge of global markets, cultural nuances, and business practices.

As part of the Queen's Young Leader award, when I got the opportunity to do a one-year course on Leading Change from Cambridge University. I had an option of five hours of mentoring. i.e., 5 hours with one mentor, or choosing up to five mentors with one hour each, or any other option in between. I chose five mentors from three continents for one hour each. I did this as they brought their life experience to that 1:1 mentoring session. Otherwise, it would take me years to learn the same through trial and error. Above and beyond this, being in India, I intentionally chose mentors from Africa, North America, and Europe to give me a global perspective and challenge my thinking. Mentors help us stand on their shoulders and see further.

Every successful person on this planet has benefited from mentorship and professional coaching. Having a relationship with a trusted mentor and gifted coach is more valuable than silver and gold. There are so many factors that go into being appropriately matched with a mentor, including age, education level, alma mater, gender, zip code, etc. If you're considering a career as a spine surgeon, for instance, find a spine surgeon who has been practicing his or her craft for at least 10 years or more. Mentors who have reached senior positions are more inclined to happily reach back, invest the time, and share their expertise with mentees. In some cases, your mentor can become a true friend in addition to being a trusted advisor.

Its true that a mentor can help you see a different perspective. However this is not a given. You need to purposely seek a mentor with a diverse background, someone that has had different experiences than you. Otherwise, you risk that your mentor turns out to be just "your future self" and the value of the relationship diminishes.

Once you have this clarity, reach out and build rapport with professionals whom you look up to, and whose careers align with your vision. Mentors are busy people, and everyone wants their time. I think the best way to approach them is through a mutual reference, clearly and authentically spelling out your goals. Also, state how you can add value to them in return. Early in my career, if I did the first part, my mentors were open to taking an interest in me; as I began to progress, adding the second part (adding mutual value) became increasingly important.

I find I got the most out of my mentor relationship by listening to him tell his origin as well as hi success story. You will learn so much just by letting them talk freely. It's like manna from heaven.

Situations in which it is not possible to take advantage of mentoring may arise when the established goals are excessively rigid, making it difficult to adapt to unforeseen circumstances. The absence of feedback and evaluation may result from a lack of autonomy, where the mentee hesitates to seek active guidance. Furthermore, overreflecting on failures can lead to paralysis in the face of future challenges. Ultimately, the compulsion to share knowledge can turn into a one-way practice, without considering the need to absorb valuable perspectives and insights from others.
