How can mentorship help an IT strategist navigate company culture?

In my experience, I've found structured mentorship to be very helpful in the beginning stages of working with a company. In my world of enterprise software consulting, we have a program of "shadowing" on projects to get hands-on training and advice from senior project managers and consultants coupled with learning the software through an academy. We have two types of mentors, one more focused on project management and the company culture and the other more focused on learning the product. Also, each consultant and PM has a line manager that can help with professional development, career goals and personal challenges. Here HR can really help too, so they serve as a less official mentor too.

There are several types of mentorships. 1. Formal Mentorship: Structured programs in organizations or institutions. 2. Informal Mentorship: Organic and less structured, often based on personal connections. 3. Peer Mentorship: Involves individuals at similar levels or stages guiding each other. 4. Reverse Mentorship: Younger or less experienced individuals mentor more seasoned professionals, often in areas like technology or current trends. It is a multifaceted relationship with significant benefits for personal growth and career development. It's a symbiotic relationship where both mentor and mentee learn and grow. Embracing mentorship can be a stepping stone to achieving greater success and fulfillment in various aspects of life.

Mentorship (formal,peer,informal) offers an opportunity for a company to invest in new resources and align the mentorship with the long term vision. I contributed towards modelling a graduate training in my organisation and my input was to make sure the trainees are skilled in new technologies to broaden the organisation's scope in the long term.

In my experience, a mentor can help a strategist in Understanding the Unwritten Rules of an organisation. They broadly fall into the two categories below; Uncovering hidden dynamics: A mentor can provide valuable insights into the company's unspoken rules, power structures, and communication styles. This can help the IT strategist avoid cultural faux pas and build stronger relationships with colleagues. Decoding departmental silos: IT strategists often interact with various departments. A mentor can help them understand the different cultures and priorities within each department, facilitating smoother collaboration and communication.

In essence, mentorship serves as a crucial incubator for developing future strategists and leaders in IT. By combining real-world experience, strategic guidance, personal development, and exposure to leadership nuances, mentorship equips IT strategists with the skills and insights necessary to excel in leadership positions. Fundamentally, strategic success is deeply rooted in culture, operating models and behaviors. Strategists must always recognize and work these pitfalls: 1 Unclear & Conflicting Values & Priorities 2 Ineffective Senior Team 3 Ineffective Leadership Styles 4 Poor communication & coordination 5 Lack of value creation & process understanding 6 Lack of people & customer centricity 7 Cost cutting over sustainable growth generation. Seemingly counter-intuitive, successful IT strategy starts with Gemba walks and process operators, not executives' opinions.
