Although holding a Ph. D. in linguistics but being 87 years old, it is assumed that there is nothing new that I can offer in any field - even copy editing, e.g. I wanted to contribute to the demand by Wikipedia for editors and subeditors but I finally gave up trying on being confronted by so many rules and regulations in wishing to contribute. I could also give many other examples of the exasperation of "oldies" being confronted with brash smug attitudes of the "young" not realizing that they are also aging with each day of their lives.

Experience is a great teacher! Learning from the experience of mentors is very impactful on a career journey. We’d be fools not to gain insights from a mentor's successes and failures. I’ve found often, the most impactful things mentors can do is be there for their mentees. Hear them out and enable them to think through the issues. That empathy and confidence goes a long way to a mentee’s success.

I am no longer interested in setting up my own mentoring group but would gladly join an existing group, e.g. Wikipedia or any language teaching / learning group. Others need to look at my CV printed clearly under my name, norman bird linguist, on google.

While mentoring has its benefits, sponsors bring a more comprehensive and influential approach to closing the skill gap. Their ability to drive systemic change, address structural barriers, leverage influence and networks, foster leadership development, and provide accountability contributes significantly to skill development and narrowing the gap within an industry. We need sponsors because they equalize opportunities, especially for people of color and marginalized groups who face additional barriers.
