Further to Robyn Joe Cherian's answer, line charts are ideally suited for data which are time-dependent, in the sense that a data point to some extent relates to its predecessor. A typical example would be a temperature chart, where two data points also resemble a trend. For discrete values, such as precipitation (or sold items), quantities more generally, bar charts may be better suited if the data are binned, say, in 24 hr/daily increments.

Arguably, not all time series data are best visualised using line charts. If the data are noisy, a scatter plot (possibly with partially transparent symbols) may be better suited. Once data are clean enough, though, they show the timely evolution of the phenomenon of interest. When smoothing the data, or fitting curves through noisy datasets, they may reveal hidden relationships, but data smoothing/fitting can be tricky if inappropriate fits are chosen.
