Two major routes of contribution that lidar can make to additive manufacturing are part verification and one-off tooling. In the former case, lidar is a method to determine dimensional attributes of a printed component, to verify the fabricated part meets the design intend of the CAD and/or drawings. In the latter, lidar can capture a surface point cloud of a part or assembly that is not CAD-defined. This point cloud can then be used to design and fabricate mating tools - via AM - for composite layups, drill templates, assembly jigs, FOD covers, and other secondary process support tools
