How can leadership improve IT risk culture?

As an IT Leader, one should prioritize business goals and objectives, through strategic approach. Identify the Risks, Threats & Opportunities Involved, in and out of the box, due to integration systems / other departments (upstream / down steam systems), dependencies. Map Risks to one of more objectives, to identify which objectives are in danger! Once, the Risks are Identified assign owners, define role, responsibilities and the action plan required. Ensure, risk management processes and practices in place are wisely adopted, by risk owners. Finally, transparency & trust, feedback, rewards should be there for contributions and achievements for the members involved.

In my view IT leaders should assess and devise a IT risk aligned strategy which blends with overall business risk appetite and investments required to enable your technology delivery, infrastructure & products for a risk resilient embedded culture. Some of key steps to align IT risk with business objectives is to: a. Risk identification and root causes to gain complete visibility. b. Assess current & emerging IT risks and assign a measurement of probability, severity, and potential impact for prioritization c. Determine the best approach for identified risks for correct mitigation with optimal response. d. Monitor, review, & continually re-visit to derive and implement lessons learned via PIR exercise

IT leaders must also pursue a proactive approach to identifying and assessing IT and cybersecurity risks. This involves implementing robust security controls, performing regular vulnerability assessments, and integrating security practices into all aspects of the IT architecture. At the same time, it is imperative to ensure that solid incident response plans are in place to address visible security potentials. By fostering a culture of cybersecurity and IT, organizations can position themselves more resiliently and adaptively in the face of emerging threats.

Foster a culture where employees at all levels are encouraged to identify and report potential IT risks without fear of retribution. Make it clear that proactive risk reporting is a valuable contribution to the organization's security. For example, Leadership publicly recognizes and rewards employees who demonstrate exemplary behaviour in identifying and reporting risks. This acknowledgment creates positive reinforcement and encourages others to be vigilant in recognizing and reporting potential threats

Improving IT risk culture starts with aligning IT risk management to our overarching business strategy. As a leader with my own risk management company, I stress the importance of communicating IT risk's value across the organization, ensuring decisions reflect business priorities. Collaborating closely with various departments, understanding their unique IT challenges, and offering tailored support is key. Each person's role and responsibility form a crucial piece of the larger puzzle, and without clarity on these aspects, the picture becomes blurry, leading to inefficiencies and potential risks slipping through the cracks. For instance, in the realm of IT operations, where reliability and security are paramount, having a clear delineation of who is responsible for what aspect ensures that every facet is addressed adequately. This not only improves operational efficiency but also enhances risk management by ensuring that potential vulnerabilities are identified and addressed promptly.

Additionally, IT leaders must promote a culture of shared responsibility throughout the organization. This includes raising awareness and educating all employees about the importance of IT risk management and how they can contribute to mitigating these risks in their daily activities. At the same time, it is essential to implement communication and reporting mechanisms to ensure that concerns and findings related to IT risks are communicated appropriately and timely at all levels of the organization. This creates an environment in which IT risk management is considered a collective, integrated concern across the enterprise.

It is important to establish an enterprise risk governance structure . It is bound to influence risk management and risk intelligence. This framework should include risk management policies, procedures, oversight activities, different types of risk assessments, risk indicator reports, and code of conduct and ethics programs.

Users should feel confident that their IT and Risk Leadership understand the business needs and can provide appropriate support and guidance. Transparency and Trust, unless built into the process will incentivise users to try and go outside the set boundaries which in turn can significantly increase the risks to the organisation. Instead, if IT Leaders are seen as being the department of "No", people will try and bypass the controls.

A clear and streamlined organizational structure serves as a starting point for end-to-end risk-transformation efforts. By then clarifying roles and responsibilities across the first and second lines of defense, institutions can improve accountability, ensure full coverage of the risks they face, and reduce duplication of effort.

With the increased cyber-security risks/threats to corporations, the leadership can act in the following ways to improve IT risk culture 1) Top-down communication of the importance of IT risk management from the leadership to the employees. It is not just the IT department but all employees are responsible for IT security. 2) Mandatory IT risk training for all employees and feedback sessions to raise any doubts or questions. 3) Upgrade of IT systems and processes to raise the defence against cyber-security threats 4) Vendor selection of IT systems should go through a process that is transparent. While costs are important, leadership should emphase that no corners are cut when it comes to IT risk management.

An additional strategy could involve the use of decision-making frameworks that incorporate risk considerations, such as risk/benefit analyses, to ensure that all decisions are made with a full understanding of their risk implications.

Set Up a Risk Reporting System: Create a standardized system for reporting IT risk metrics that allows for easy tracking and analysis. Conduct Regular Risk Audits: Schedule periodic audits to assess the effectiveness of IT risk management strategies and identify gaps. Without a healthy risk culture, uncertainty about achieving company goals increases. Executives are evaluated by growth/revenue, cost containment, and brand/reputation. You need to describe how your IT risk concerns increase uncertainty for the achievement of these three objectives.
