Junior strategic communication professionals can both build credibility and add value by demonstrating that they understand the company's strategic priorities and that their efforts are aligned with those priorities and designed to support/achieve organizational goals. Too often, communication professionals simply focus on their craft, and they may be experts at what they do, but unless they can clearly align what they do with company needs they'll never rise to more senior levels. So, your first step, get a look at your company's strategic plan if it has one. If it doesn't, ask your manager or other senior leaders what the company's strategic priorities and goals are. Then think about how you can support those goals through your work.

I've been lucky in my career to have senior leaders willing to mentor me and, particularly when I was an entry-level employee, found my team structure to be a relay race. Senior leaders face competing priorities and I regarded my role as the first-leg of the race. I added value by providing the bedrock of what the team needed to be successful. This could be comprehensive research on a situation, providing insights, and ultimately driving the team forward on a strong foot. Once I passed the baton, my next job was continuing to support the team by being proactive and flexible until we reached the finish line.

Identify a gap or a challenge and work on it. Try finding solutions and pitch them to seniors. I always like talking to juniors, whose perspective is fresh and daringly creative. So find a way to address seniors, catch them during lunch for a friendly chat or approach them after a meeting, and briefly tell them your ideas.

Be the person who anticipates needs. Bring big-picture thinking and precise execution to meet them. Stay hungry, and stay humble.

It's equally important not to be rigidly fixated on your own ideas. Being stuck on a single concept or viewpoint can hinder effective dialogue and collaboration. Senior leaders often appreciate individuals who are willing to explore various alternatives and are open to evolving strategies or ideas based on changing circumstances or insights gained through discussions.

Following up is like a secret weapon for anyone who wants to be seen as a professional, especially those starting out in communication. There are two situations where following up is super important: -After asking for advice: Show your team or your supervisor you're listening and appreciate their help by checking back with them. - After asking for feedback: Make sure you know what's expected and get approval by following up with your boss. But just doing the follow-up isn't enough. To really make an impression, add some extra value to your communication. Share your own ideas, ask questions that get people thinking. This shows you're not just checking back for the sake of it, you're actively engaged and taking initiative.
