Being introvert doesn’t mean that we are not comfortable talking to people. We all derive energy in our own ways, I am an introvert and I enjoy talking to people in small group settings. Networking requires authenticity, be you, be open and approach people accordingly. That’s the best way to network !

Being an introverted leader myself, it has been quite a journey over the years. I feel embracing yourself as is, keeping an open mind and being authentic will truly help you evolve. Additionally, social media platforms like LinkedIn provide a comfortable space to initiate and nurture professional relationships, while leveraging existing connections eases the process. Active listening and patience is inherent to introverts and it does enhances one's ability to forge deeper connections. Ultimately, by aligning networking strategies with your personality one can not only expand professional network but can do so authentically and comfortably.

I was getting interviewed for a role I really wanted. While waiting for the final interviewer, the most senior person in HR, I felt nervous and uncomfortable. I did two power poses: the “Wonder Woman” and another which involved leaning back in my chair with my hands clasped behind my head. No joke, that’s when the interviewer walked in! Yes, I was embarrassed, but it worked out fine. The power poses had shifted my energy from discomfort to ease. P.S. I got the job!

I've learned that preparation and practice are key to successful networking. Before attending a networking event, I spend time researching the backgrounds and interests of people I'm likely to meet, tailoring my approach to ensure relevance and connection. I also craft a concise elevator pitch that succinctly conveys who I am and what I do, practicing it repeatedly until it feels natural. Additionally, I prepare a set of open-ended questions to engage others in conversation, practicing these with a trusted colleague to gain confidence. This preparation not only eases my anxiety but also equips me with the tools to engage meaningfully, making each networking opportunity more effective and less daunting.

Online networking allows me to connect with people at my own pace and comfort level and also creates opportunities for offline meetings.

Social media is an incredible tool for introverted leaders as it allows them to leverage their strengths, flexibly manage situations, and have more control over circumstances. Hence, I believe it's one of the best tools for various purposes.

While doing so, I'm mindful to balance online interactions with personal touchpoints; for instance, after a meaningful online discussion, I often suggest a virtual coffee meeting to deepen the connection. This approach not only broadens my network but also ensures that my relationships are not solely digital, fostering stronger, more personal connections.

I prioritize quality over quantity in my networking approach. I focus on forming a few deep, meaningful connections rather than spreading myself too thin across many superficial ones. For example, at a recent conference, instead of trying to meet everyone, I chose to engage in longer, more in-depth conversations with a select few individuals whose interests and goals aligned closely with mine. By asking thoughtful, open-ended questions and actively listening, I was able to establish a genuine rapport and understanding. This is actually essential to networking and most people have to work hard to achieve it. And remember to differentiate between personal vs professional. You can be an introvert when it comes to your private persona, and an extrovert in a work-related context. Another great asset for networking.
