How can images help you capture the essence of a character in your writing?

Sometimes you are unable to explain little details about your character. However, by using images, you can show the things about the character that you are thinking of.

Images offer a visual representation of a character, helping to stimulate your imagination and provide concrete details. They can evoke emotions and convey personality traits more vividly than words alone. Visual references can assist in maintaining consistency in descriptions and character appearances throughout your writing.

Writers get ideas from all over. If you see something and want to write about it, first tell yourself and then tell the audience. You shouldn't need more than a sentence to describe a moody fog covered meadow. If you're using an image for the cover then that will draw your audience in and the writing will trap them there. With thousands of images of the world you don't need a lot to spark the image in the reader's mind.

Generative AI like Midjourney can be an easy way to visualize a character get "feedback" as the AI has to be able to understand your description of the character. This can also feel rewarding as a creative exercise because you can bring a character to life relatively easily.

Create a digital or physical mood board or collage for each character, compiling images that represent their appearance, personality, environment, and significant objects. Use folders or digital albums to categorize and store images for easy reference.

When I create characters, I do a complete back story for their lives before they take their place in the story. This consists of finding photos of them, where they live, where they grew up, what past relationships they’ve had… anything that makes them into a real person. I put all these together on character boards that I refer back to when I need some inspiration on how they think and behave. Sometimes I keep my character boards on my laptop but when I need to, I print them out and put them in my character scrap book - it creates an amazing resource to look back on and is so useful for character consistency.

Print them out. Mood board that character. Create a notebook with collages of inspiration. Make notes of things they would do, say, or enjoy as comic blurbs.
