How can Higher Education professionals stay motivated while freelancing from home?

As with any industry, one must accept that some people are effective at remote work and others are simply not. So that's the first question that must be asked and answered. For those that are super effective at remote work, setting clear expectations is key - but the expectations are around timeline and deliverables. One must also recognize people work differently - some are great at early morning work and meetings while others are not. Allow everyone to figure out how they best work, so long as they are meeting their deliverables and on time.

Set office hours and ensure that you stay within them, don’t be afraid to shut off for the day lest you burn yourself out. When you are teleworking the challenge can be the feeling that your efforts and work lack impact so create lists and other tools to help you gauge the impact and success of your personal efforts as they might be harder to tangibly feel the weight of your impact virtually.

In my experience, the work environments have dramatically changed since COVID for so many and this as well impacts higher education professionals freelancing as the ability to interact with people is more challenging as well and specifically around additional administrative efforts to get in sync. I suggest people try several things: 1) host regular team huddles with clients so everyone dedicates the time, 2) use project management software to keep track of items and progress, 3) host a virtual office hour to two where there is no set mtg but it’s like everyone knows one another are avail and can be on zoom and hop into ad hoc breakouts, and 4) make sure to get out of the house and work at a share space it’s energizing!

Some tend to forget recognition of the achievement does not merely come from monetary aspects but can derive from the expression of words and keep on giving continuous support for each and everyone through involvement and participating directly or indirectly by giving some freedom and trust to them. I strongly believe this will make employees feel more feeling of inclusive in an organizational setting and as a result they will come up with more creative and innovative ideas to support organizational excellence.

It's important to create a work day that has routine in it, in order to be super productive. So absolute must haves should be: -don't work in your pjs when you don't have meetings; actually get ready and dress like you're going to the office. -have a lunch break and regular breaks as if you're in the office -don't be tempted to socialize or chit chat too much on team messengers to make up for water cooler conversations; that will throw your schedule off. -try not to do personal things during your work hours like doing laundry, cooking, etc. During work hours, focus completely on work. Then do personal things in personal hours. That helps keep some normalcy and balance.
