How can Higher Education professionals collaborate more effectively?

Developing networks between various individuals (industry and institutions), discussing interests and collaborating on various projects. Most scholars share a common interest and are often unaware of current developments and research interests of others (especially those in other disciplines). Using our communication skills to build relationships that will benefit academia and industry.

In my experience in the Higher Education sector, I have witnessed the transformative power of collaboration in shaping the future of education. This can be achieved through: - Encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration to break down silos and create a holistic learning environment. - Embracing technological advancements to facilitate seamless collaboration through different digital platforms, virtual classrooms, and collaborative tools to bridge geographical gaps. - Implement mentorship programs that pair experienced professionals with those newer to the field. - Actively seek global engagement opportunities by participating in international conferences, collaborative research projects, and global educational initiatives.

Higher education professionals can enhance collaboration by fostering interdisciplinary projects. For instance, a history professor and a computer science instructor could collaborate on a project exploring the use of technology in historical research. This approach encourages cross-disciplinary partnerships, fostering a richer exchange of ideas and expertise.

When higher educational professionals ‘who know who they are, what they are good at and who they want to be or contribute in their life’ beautiful things happen. Keeping our mind open to collaborations might take us to a wonderful place in life. We might have to: Present challenges and problems to be solved Crate events or meeting points Get some interested individuals signed up for collaborations Get professionals into teams Teams’ leaders should take turns to lead periodically Use communication technologies to keep all professions informed Time to time, provide PDPs Focus and work towards goals and achievements Keep working and growing till problems got solved and Celebrate and rewards individual deserving recognitions.

Higher Education pros are offended operating from a deficiency of resources (time, money, etc.), so one is the best ways to collaborate is to find stakeholders that will both benefit from a program or intervention. Then, be very clear that during this process you will be taking things OFF your partners plates or enhancing their ability to do their job more efficiently. Also, collaborate ti define roles so that every stakeholder feels like they have a say and some ownership of the initiative.

The importance of diversity really cannot be overstated. I’d argue that one of the reasons that the UK punches well above its weight for research excellence, for example, is due to the high proportion of international academics in the UK. The nation thrives on the diversity of talent. Alice Gast, former head of Imperial College London, likened it to “hybrid vigour” in botany – the beneficial qualities of cross-breeding in plants. “As you build a team, you bring together diverse people to provide the most effective views,” she said. “Individuals brought up in different educational systems and with exposure to different societies and markets approach problems differently: thus, international teams broaden and augment individual thinking.”

When I joined a university, the (very senior) exec member who hired me said at the end of our first meeting, “I’ve seen adults join here and leave as children, don’t let that happen to you.” This haunted me for some time, as I thought about the reasons she’d observed this and felt the need to tell me. I think it boiled down to established norms taking away responsibilities from individuals, removing their accountability and diminishing their successes. It’s far harder for this counterproductive culture to take root in diverse workplaces, where team members respect each others’ viewpoints and empower each individual to be recognised for their strengths. Higher Education is enriched by diversity and the respect it can harness.

Education thrives on collaboration, Higher Education in the UK has been one of our greatest strengths standing the test of time through decades. HE brings together different perspectives it removes boundaries in doing creating collaboration based on respect and an intrinsic desire to learn, unlearn and relearn - a symphony that is created thought shared goals and visions the enjoyment and enrichment that this diversity and difference brings has been celebrated and enabled UK to stand apart...and perhaps herein lies the challenge has HE moved from the good of society and community to political hot potatoe?

I liked the previouse comment by Andrew Plant , quoting :" I've seen many come here as adults and leave as children" . I have seen this across the industry and in many places that everyone is adapting passively to the norm , trying to avoid challenge, keeping the positive vibes but yet with no clear real innovation or change for better. So effectively keep the stream flowing but no clear added value. Organisational culture as country, community and thought cultures are much shaped by how leaders react and adopt freedom of expression , how much they believe in everyone's right to be entitled to their own opinion and more importantly their attitude to allow that , enable it and encourage critical thinking and positive driving force.

Diversity must include different approaches to questions within the discipline in question. Too often colleagues prefer a monolith and resist appointments of those who use methods or have assumptions different from their own

Communication is key. Be clear, to the point and direct. The concepts of plain English and using an active voice in your writing are good ones to follow. As for frequency, think carefully about how often you communicate, and in what manner. To ensure you get the right balance of seeming regularly available to support your colleagues and wider network, while not overcommunicating and therefore devaluing the messages you're trying to get across. Finally, think of the communication channel. Does what you say need to be an e-mail? Would the detail be easily explained in-person or on a call? Do you need a formal record of the communication? Consider all of the above.

Higher education (or any shared governance organization) is famous for programs stalling, shifting, and being absorbed into other programs. Because of this, all stakeholders must remain informed throughout the process or else they may feel disconnected or left behind. For some projects, digital tools like BaseCamp or even the Google suite can provide tools to track objectives and collaborator input.

In my experience, open communication can be challenging given the diversity that can exist when collaborations are more global. We are still adjusting to the distance, the absence of traditional body language markers. Creating networks and learning communities can help us build the relationships that will facilitate communication.

Conflicts and challenges are usual aspects in academia-industry partnerships (AIP). They mainly related to intellectual property, the risk of the initiative, excessive bureaucracy, and project’s targets. Once the issue has been clarified, an investigation needs to be carried out proposing approaches on the best solution & determining the responsibilities and contribution of each party. Obviously, executives need to communicate and brainstorm together until they exhaust all options to meet the goals of the initiative. In AIP, never presume that an issue is fully resolved. You need to continue keeping an eye on the issue and assess whether the exploited solution is effective. If the issue resurfaces, you need to take the necessary actions.

Language is so important. I may be unaware that the language I am choosing to communicate my perspectives could also be a trigger or used as signals in other contexts. I want to communicate and wait for responses, ask questions, explain, define and redefine - which also requires more time and effort. It is a slow work to build trust and clear communication.

One thing to keep in mind is that different offices ebb and flow at different times of the year. When planning longer term projects, it is important to take into consideration when certain offices may be overwhelmed, or when they may have increased capacity for deeper work. This can help prevent stress and anxiety and also demonstrate a sincere care for the workflow of partners.

It is also important to first verify that there truly is a problem. Sometimes what we perceive as a problem is not truly an issue. Our difference that can seem problematic, for example, may be assets. Sometimes we simply need to re-orient our perspectives.

“Remember when we compiled that useful report together?” “Remember when we nailed that conference presentation?” …are things you’ll never say to your colleagues many years from now. Instead you’ll reminisce about the charity walk you struggled through together, the team meal out where somebody fell off their chair or the time you had to dig their car out of the snow. Culture isn’t manufactured in an office, it’s anchored in the very human interactions we all crave away from a desk. Celebrating successes and reflecting on improvement is best achieved outside your normal workspace. You’ll be more creative, you’ll appreciate it more - and most importantly - you’re likely to remember it better. We’ll always have Paris!

Collaboration is the key to progression. Education is a journey from ignorance to knowledge. Therefore, professionals from the field of education cannot, and must not thrive alone. They must know what is going on in various parts of the world, and then only can they provide true guidance to their clients. If they try to stay on their isolated islands, they won’t get the latest updates. Education is ever evolving and for international students, it also involves visa rules and regulations which keep changing. So, staying connected is the only way to go, for attaining productive outcomes.

In today's dynamic educational landscape, effective collaboration among Higher Education professionals is key to fostering innovation and student success. However, as it has been pointed out here is not always easy. We need to be ready to encourage interdisciplinary projects, share resources, and establish regular forums for idea exchange c. Embracing technology for seamless communication and promoting a culture of openness and mutual support enhances collective efforts. By valuing diverse perspectives and pooling expertise, we can elevate teaching methodologies, research endeavors, and institutional strategies, ultimately enhancing the higher education experience for all stakeholders. What we need is the decision to do it.

The academic, the custodian of the curriculum who has the power to decide and autonomy to define who and why to collaborate, needs to have trust certainty in themselves and the structures that support crucial curriculum decision. After all, it is they who are ‘measured’ against the reported success or failure of their module/course. Maybe we need to consider who owns the curriculum and make it a shared responsibility.

In my experience people need to want to collaborate for a start. Finding like-minded people to collaborate with is also important. This goes for students as well who sometimes actually refuse to work with others on team projects.

Welcome new members. When teams collaborate over time, they can form a strong network. Ensure the network is not exclusive. Be open to welcome new team members.
