Realistically, you won’t be using GANs to generate music. Many of the tools/resources mentioned in other responses are variational autoencoder-based methodologies, not GAN based. Many of the best state-of-the-art tools are now even utilizing LLMs and attention mechanisms to generate music, although the repetitive nature of music makes it a great domain for recurrent networks IMO. if you really want to get started generating music with AI, I would suggest use tools that I’ve already been created to play around with. Once you start running into limitations with existing products, only then would building your own models or fine-tuning existing models be necessary for most use cases.

In my humble opinion, GANs are no longer SOTA in early 2024 for generating music. The best performing models are Meta's MusicGen/MAGNeT or Google's AudioLM, which are based on transformers that use acoustic and semantic audio units. Still, GANs are used to create these acoustic unit codebooks (e.g. Encodec, Soundstream, Descript Audio Codec) on which these generation models are partly based .

Some good practices that can help improve the results are conditioning GANs on additional musical inputs to guide the generation, crafting specialized model architectures fit for music data (scaling), training on large, diverse datasets with quality representations, employing multiple discriminators to better evaluate, enabling user feedback during generation (robust), ensembling simpler conditional GANs focused on musical facets, and hybridizing GANs with complementary techniques like RNNs (hybrid). According to the Generative learning trilemma, a generative model cannot achieve the following 3 properties simultaneously: high distribution coverage, fast sampling, and high sample quality.
