Well, there's no denying that human beings are wired to enjoy games.- And when they experience a part of gamification while learning, they tend to stick around a bit more than they usually would. Creative and gamified elements makes adult learners engage more. This helps them retain more information which in turn leads to ''achieving learning goals''.

I think it does motivate people to do e-learning more often, i would say it would work particularly only if the course is a short one that you can finish in a few minutes, that means that you may even repeat the smae course to get a high score. Of course, along with the score, it would be great if there could be other incentives such as recognising the top of the chart occasionally through an announcement or a small token of appreciation.

In my experience, gamification is a good way to motivate learners. By this, I am not referring to the design of games for E-learning courses, but instead the leaderboard aspect. I have seen this used effectively in sales teams. For example, the sales team is given a E-learning course to complete, once they do so - they can achieve a badge or points. Given their environment is naturally competitive, this is normal to their persona and so works well.

A motivated learner does enjoy the ride. I personally love proposing gamified e-learning competitions through Kahoot or Blooket, as it's always successful in many ways. It boosts their concentration and their will to learn by answering correctly in order to win. A double win for me as a teacher as well!
