I agree with assessing your readiness, but I do think it’s more important to address the readiness of the organization. If they are not ready, you need to really work with them in getting to the readiness stage and that is to make sure you LISTEN! So many leaders do not listen and I mean really listen to the people doing the work. We do not step in their shoes every day, unless you really listen and get them to know you are listening, only then can you find the roadblocks to any change needed.
I believe there are 3 questions to be assessed prior to the change: 1) what is the clear problem to be solved? Can it be clearly formulated in a short statement? 2) does the affected organization understand that problem as something that needs to be addressed? 3) is that problem/solution a priority for the business? If one of those points is missing, there is still homework to be done by the leader of the transformation. Of course, depending on what is your level in the organization different actions might be required (C-level vs senior management vs middle management…). On the other hand, the fundamental element is always communication and alignment towards a ‘burning platform’ that needs to be fixed now.
Having a clear vision and strategy is key however the way these are communicated is even more important. If people in the organization are not aware and engaged, then speculation and rumors can sabotage change. Do not underestimate the power of teams and communities vs single individuals; when everyone believes in the vision, implementing a new strategy and achieving change will be easier.
