Contributing to open source projects is one of the best ways to learn from others and add some differentiators to your resume. I have interviewed more than 100 software developers and always noticed engineers who did something extra. In interviews, other than good communication, problem solving, and algorithm design skills, I look for signals that the engineer has ambition to grow as a software designer. By contributing to open source projects, you show that software development is more than a job for you and you would like to be a part of the open source community to learn from others. I always prefer hiring an engineer with ambition and growth potential. Contributing open source projects will show that you are different.
