How can entry-level professionals develop leadership skills in workplace safety?

Hmmm ... this is a backwards question. Be the safety supporter. It's a great, willing and compelling concept "safety leadership" and been very profitable for many consultants and training entities. I was convinced it was golden about a decade ago, however the reality I have participated in appears to the the reverse. When I re-read the description to the left - it is not describing leadership, it is best describing a "Champion" of safety, the one who supports others. Who is humble and needs not to chase a leadership title. If you want to influence safety, work hard it the background and maybe follow a mantra I have stuck with "make the complex simple in safety" and people will need you less. You will raise others to champion safety.

Rob you are so right, many safety people think that safety is power and workers have to do what safety says. That is completely wrong. We are here to guide and mentor our stakeholders (employers, workers and supervisors) we do that through good communication and understanding, I like to follow the KISS principal don't make it complicated keep it simple and build relationships. Don't complicate things. Work is hard enough and requires your full attention don't put obstacles in the way. Teach, understand, mentor, guide and be humble. Your a safety person, you don't know everything about the work being performed. Learn from your workers and supervisors so you can support them

Companies need to invest in people. All too often, the manager is not a leader. There needs to be proper vetting and support from the organization to assure the people managing are leaders before they head into the field. Leaders require in depth knowledge of regulatory requirements and an understanding of the companies philosophy towards the implementation of those regulations. Without upper management support, there will be no leaders, and as a result, no safety culture. Every problem is managements responsibility. As a result, upper management has to be comprised of true leaders to start with and they need to lead by example. This mentorship and support is how entry level professionals learn to become leaders.

Leaders in safety and other aspects of the business are watched constantly to make sure they are following their own rules. The integrity of the safety leader is severely damaged if your actions are not consistent with your safety policies. Once trust is lost it is difficult to regain, always remember that your actions will either strengthen or tear down your influence with people. Be vigilant and never cut corners.

Demonstrating safety commitment is essential for creating a strong safety culture within an organization. It sets a powerful example for employees, leading to higher engagement and a greater sense of value and support. This commitment fosters trust, credibility, and compliance, as well as a culture of continuous improvement. Moreover, it enhances the organization's reputation and competitiveness, signaling responsible business practices and ethical conduct. Es fundamental que la seguridad esté presente en cada decisión que tomamos, tanto de tipo organizacional, de dise?o de procedimientos e instrucciones de trabajo, en las compras, etc. La mejor forma de demostrar el compromiso con la seguridad es predicando con el ejemplo: uso de equipos de protección, cumplimiento de procedimientos, vigilancia continua de las condiciones de seguridad, etc. También es importante incorporar las preocupaciones de seguridad en las conversaciones con los compa?eros, generando un ambiente en el que todo el mundo se pueda sentir partícipe. Cuando se detecten desviaciones o incumplimientos, no buscar culpables si no tratar de entender qué ha pasado e involucrar a los implicados en la búsqueda de la solución.

Se debe cuidar la comunicación a todos los niveles y en todos los canales. En las conversaciones con los compa?eros generando un clima de confianza que propicie conversaciones sinceras y adoptando el lenguaje y tono adecuado en cada caso. En los documentos escritos, empleando documentos atractivos y visuales que lancen el mensaje de forma sencilla e impactante. En cartelería, se?ales, etc. asegurando la claridad del mensaje, su vigencia y su correcto estado en todo momento. En la comunicación en el día a día con los compa?eros sobre temas de seguridad debemos evitar el tono padre-hijo o el abuso de la posición de autoridad y propiciar un diálogo entre compa?eros dando la oportunidad de hacer aportaciones y de expresar preocupaciones.

Debemos mantener siempre una mentalidad abierta y asumir que siempre podemos aprender algo nuevo. Ante los accidentes e incidentes debemos profundizar en sus causas y entender qué ha sucedido. Es fundamental que esa investigación se realice en colaboración con los trabajadores afectados y se debe buscar el punto de vista del trabajador cuando haya desviaciones de procedimientos. En muchas ocasiones los comportamientos desviados de los procedimientos son reflejo de procedimientos mal dise?ados o mal comunicados. Mantener una mentalidad abierta también permite entender que en otras empresas u otros puestos de trabajo pueden haber encontrado una mejor manera de hacer las cosas y estar dispuestos a aprender de ellos.

Hay que procurar que cada trabajador se sienta corresponsable de la seguridad y al mismo tiempo que se sienta protagonista. Debemos proporcionar entornos de confianza en los que los trabajadores puedan cuestionar cómo se hacen las cosas, proporcionar ideas y participar en la investigación de accidentes o incidentes cuando ocurran. Recognize that you don't know everything that there is to know in safety right off the bat. Good safety professionals, even experienced ones, know that they have to understand the work being done before they can enforce anything that comes from a book. Get to know the work being done and more importantly, the people DOING the work and ask questions. Learn from them. Safety isn't black and white; it's a living, breathing thing that evolves and changes from task to task and situation to situation. You have to have a growth mindset and be open to being challenged along the way. Leadership is a mindset, not a title. Safety leadership is no different. If you want people to follow, you have to try your best to walk beside them first.

Develop proactive relationships with the labor force and floor management. Insure you “do what you say” so you can be trusted.
