How can engineering management training help mechanical engineers become better managers?

If you are competent with technical the technical skills, the only thing that can kill your initiative is your boss and your boss's boss with unrealistic expectations. I learned engineering management through a program that Sage Hospitality used to do 20+ years ago like this so yes, this type of program will teach you the non technical skills like proper procedures and record keeping as I see very little of that now.

In my experience, the worst hindrance engineering managers and their teams suffer from, is poor communications skills. Great projects will fail if the teams can not talk to each other. This is not the only facet that needs to be tended to, Of equal importance are the soft skills. How do you motivate your team to move beyond obstacles? How do you empower them to do the best job possible, and learn and grow in the process? To have the best results, an engineering manager needs also to be supportive of their employees' work/life balance when requirements and expectations are rolling over their heads. The idea is that there is needed for complex training and not a linear/unidimensional approach.

I remember when I first started my engineering management training, I faced some challenges that I had to overcome. Good training is always needed and helpful in creating and maintaining good, efficient engineering managers. In my experience, just training is not enough to develop a good engineering manager, they had to have "the call" for this function, the technical as well as the soft, and people skills needed to excel. It is also very important to see how the company accepts and integrates a new engineering manager in its ranks. How much support does he/she get.

Engineering Management training must consider technology innovation at the speed of AI, a vital component. Our future Managers cannot afford is to lose the opportunity to stay abreast with AI and its trajectory as it relates to Engineering Management today and in the near future. We have to get in "the AI game" early so we are not surprised later.
