Becoming a professional programmer takes a long time, but it's only half the battle in the IT industry. In addition to professional qualifications, the coder must know the customer's needs and the characteristics of their systems very closely. And these systems are not simple. Even if you are a coder and an artificial intelligence wizard, getting to know a megalith consisting of hundreds of thousands or even millions of lines of source code will take even a competent person years. Therefore, the talented should not be allowed to escape. Engage them with brain-teasing tasks - and, of course, money. I guarantee that it will be cheaper for the company than the other alternative.

In my experience running one of the largest communities in Africa, we have constantly invited employees to share their experience with the community members, and we believe that by doing so, you create an open communication channel where both parties benefit. Employee performance and productivity: These are measures of how well programmers are doing their tasks and achieving their goals. Customer satisfaction and loyalty: These are measures of how happy and loyal the customers or users of the programming solutions are.

An interesting mode usefull to measure the employee engagement is to check the quality of an agile metodology process. This strategy could be fast and optimized in order to set-up and adjust any aspect in a developing process, employee engagement included.

I've really enjoyed having the data of short and regular engagement surveys, bringing these results to my team has really allowed them to express what the numbers mean to each other and highlight the trends over time. Annual longer surveys are also good to have longer conversations about deeper matters. Sometimes though, what really counts can't be measured and you hear it about the way the team talks during their one on one meetings with their manager. If you really want to increase the engagement of programmers, I've found that admitting that even with many years experience, there are moments where you're really challenged, drives trust and engagement from your team.

Don't make your engineers feel forced to help contribute to communities. Work them into it slowly and make them feel like it is there idea. Some folks are all in on day one, others don't want to be given "more work" to do... but if you can find communities that are more focused on their passion or area of expertise they'll feel far more comfortable jumping in. If the community aligns with company goals (as well as the engineers interests) it's an easy win. But don't force it just because you read it on a blog somewhere, let things occur more naturally.

Don't throw it on them as additional workload to find in their "free time". Communities can help engineers build up their resume, it allows them to showcase their name on public work (which also helps with the resume) and gives them access to smart engineers around the world specializing in things that your team may need. I've contributed code to the open source Linux kernel community, and it gave me (and our company) access to some of the leading engineers working on key technologies our company was trying to integrate. It allowed us access to some of the founders of that tech to make sure we did it right.
