Mainly, employee engagement helps directly improve the quality of services or of a physical product through more attention to detail and work effort/energy/motivation. Secondarily, when employees interact or are exposed to customers, their engagement in the business is easily perceived by the customer. A motivated and invested employee tells a customer that he product or service the employee is assisting in the offering is worth that motivation and investment. So employee engagement improves both the physical and perceived value when merchandizing a product.

It's nice to hear that employees feel engaged in their work. It's better to truly know if employee feel engaged and invested in their work.
