How can empathy improve conflict resolution in sustainable design?

As per me, Empathy is an ability to understand and share the feelings of another person. In simple terms, involves putting oneself in someone else's shoes, recognizing their emotions, and responding with a genuine understanding and care for their perspective.

In the past, I found it helpful in a conflict, and see the argument from an external point of view as a third party. Empathy is a communication skill in work and life. We are very egocentric, especially as architects, but this skill will create a better environment, more understanding, and more valuable for all the parties, and what is the best place to work is in a place where everyone is understood and not pre-judged. If we see the conflict from a different point of view, listening, understand, and find a common center point, there is an improvement in the surroundings, this will improve future relations and will create mutual respect and growth, which are where we want to lead the future generations in better spaces.

It matters because empathy would enhance interpersonal connections, promotes understanding. Empathy plays a crucial role in effective communication, conflict resolution, and building positive relationships. In various contexts and situations, from personal interactions to professional environments, empathy contributes to a more compassionate and cooperative society.

Instead of 4 steps, I would suggest it in 5 steps, 1. Active Presence - Fully present in the moment 2. Listen - Listen to the words & emotions 3. Empathetic Understanding - Put oneself in their position 4. Validate - Acknowledge their feelings & emotions 5. Responsiveness - Collaborative on solutions that consider both perspectives
