How can educational reform improve outcomes for special needs students?

As educators, we must urge reforms to include special needs students. It can significantly improve outcomes for special needs students. In my opinion, these are a few ways to improve: Integrating special needs students into general education classrooms helps them develop social skills and reduces stigma. Training teachers in special education techniques equips them with the skills to support and engage effectively. Utilizing technology to aid learning can help special needs students overcome challenges and enhance their educational experience. Additional services such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, and counseling can address the diverse needs of special needs students, leading to better academic and social outcomes.

Educational reform can greatly enhance outcomes for special needs students. Firstly, incorporating individualized education plans (IEPs) ensures that each student's unique needs are met with tailored strategies and goals. Secondly, integrating assistive technologies can provide essential support, making learning more accessible and engaging for these students. One of the most effective ways is through co-teaching, where a regular teacher and a special education teacher work together in the same classroom. This way, special needs students get the support they need without being separated, and teachers can share the workload, making it easier for everyone. Schools can also organise simple training sessions for teachers on how to adapt their lessons – using things like visual aids, shorter instructions, or flexible seating. These small changes don’t need much funding but can make a huge difference in how special needs students learn. Real reform is about making sure no one is left behind.

Adopting a mantra of adaptive teaching that supports the needs of all learners is key. At my school, we are moving away from the language of ‘differentiation’ as this approach has led to failing expectations of SEND students. Instead, your model should be ‘how can I ensure all learners can access curriculum standards and then push as many students passed this as possible?’

Speaking from experiences in severely under resourced schools, the key difference I’ve noticed for students with additional needs is that without proper resourcing, students often experience distressed behaviours. This can be due to the curriculum and school system in general not making learning accessible and therefore not meeting their needs. These distressed behaviours can then spiral into more longer term changes in behaviour as students experience low self worth, eventually resulting in educational trauma.

Beyond these key areas, continuous assessment and feedback are crucial. Regularly evaluate the effectiveness of inclusive practices and make necessary adjustments. Foster a school culture that celebrates diversity and promotes empathy among all students. Encourage peer support programs where students can learn from and support each other. Stay informed about the latest research and developments in special education to continually improve practices. As an educator, adapting and evolving is key to meeting the ever-changing needs of special education students.
