How can a doctoral degree advance your career?

There are different types of doctoral degrees. The Ph.D. in particular is focused on teaching you to become a researcher. That is an important difference. Conducting effective, credible research is not easy. People use the term casually, but there are many technical and methodological aspects you will only ever encounter in a Ph.D. program. If you want to become highly effective and capable at research, pursuing this doctorate is one of the best courses of action you can take.

I am completing a PhD at the moment; not because I need it for work, but because I believe I have insights and knowledge that will help change and validate a number of my thought processes and approaches to some industry based problems. I love the fact that I can add to the knowledge base of the world and see a difference that we can make. A Doctoral degree, especially later in life, is because you want to do, not because you need to.

A Doctorate can open doors for you. For whatever reason, people take you more seriously when you have one. It can also help you discover. Is there a problem you are really curious about and want to solve? Then consider doing a Doctorate because then you can spend at least 3 years really going into detail about it, under the guidance of experts and with the right tools. Thirdly, a Doctorate can help you if you want to be an Entrepreneur. Having a Doctorate is a good indication that you are an expert in your field. That can help you justify charging a fee for an expert service. Lastly, do a Doctorate if you are intrinsically motivated to do so. It'll be a tough period in your life and can potentially take a lot from you. Be sure its worth it.

It is strongly recommended, as a PhD student, to expand your academic and professional network. Even though most people focus only on publishing, attending international conferences in your field can be very helpful in finding a good opportunity for your next career step.

When I was a doctoral student, I met many peers whom I still collaborate and write with to this day. Because of these collaborations, I have been published in national and international scholarly publications. I was able to bring my peers on different projects and podcasts that I was working on as well. Together we built our visibility, reputation, and influence in the academic and corporate fields. This proves we do have to do the work alone to make a difference and share the knowledge.

During your doctoral journey, you don't just gain knowledge; you also build relationships. It's akin to joining a prestigious club of scholars. Brazilian universities often collaborate with international institutions, allowing doctoral candidates to engage with a global community of experts. Your advisors, peers, and collaborators can become pivotal connections, opening doors to collaborative research projects, conferences, and even job opportunities.

Research now a days is using interdisciplinary fields, and this can be extremely helpful for us (doctoral students), to not only dive deep into our specific strength but also to get knowledge about other domains which provides more doors for our future career. This also enhances our network with people from vast fields. As PhD students, we have to showcase our research in conferences and this again helps to get connected with other students, professors and also, improve our scientific communication, self confidence and similar abilities.

Thus far, I have 2 undergraduate degrees, 2 masters and a doctorate, which has not advance my career. It has prohibited me as the over qualified pool for employment opportunities in the sports industry. For example, the NFL has declined and denied my application for many 200+ positions for over 10+ years. Other sports and entertainment organizations have also refused to accept my applications for consideration. In other, I have been offered other employment outside my scope of career interest to be insulted with pay scale lower than my expected qualifications, experience and accomplishments. It was been a challenging process in seeking an executive position with compensation of the aforementioned. Nonetheless, I am proud of my education.

The doctoral degree alone will not advance your career. Doctoral students need to understand that there are valuable skills that the doctoral experience provides such as critical thinking, written communication (specifically crafting arguments), analytical skills, etc. but you have to be able to communicate how those skills apply to whatever experience and career you are striving to advance in. Crafting a compelling story for how you have honed those skills and how they will help you succeed in your chosen career path is definitely an effective approach that I've learned in my personal experience and the experiences of other doctoral students I've coached.

I started a PhD after 3 mentors advised me that a doctorate was key to staying in a university management role. However, after my 1st week of studies, I realized I was REALLY there because I loved feeling out of my depth, surrounded by people much smarter than me, and being immersed in boundless literature to read and digest. The PhD experience transformed how I relate to myself and others, to difficulties, and to the unknown. I am much more curious about others and forgiving of myself and others' flaws as a result. I think I'm a better Manager, Director, leader and writer as a result. Plus, I love being part of several ongoing academic communities of practice. I highly recommend doing a PhD in midlife.

Obtaining a doctoral degree will certainly allow you to explore different career options. When I started my doctoral program, I wanted to pursue teaching. By the time I graduated, that was no longer my goal, and I wanted to stay in administration. However, because I took an active approach to my exploration, I got to co-teach a course and serve on a university-wide teaching committee. The insights I gained from those experiences allowed me to create stronger connections with the professors I interacted with as an administrator.

I was so young when I obtained my doctorate degree. At the time, I decided to try different industries. That was the best decision of my career. Fast forward to today, the ease of access in industries such as academia, health care, entertainment, and management. My advice for someone pursuing a doctorate is to build your academic profile (or professional brand) by leveraging the brand of organizations/institutions - regardless of the industry.

A doctorate doesn't just prepare you for academia; it broadens your horizons. In Brazil, with the increasing emphasis on research and innovation, many industries and sectors value doctoral expertise. From consulting to government think-tanks, from R&D in corporates to NGO roles, a doctorate equips you with analytical and problem-solving skills that are highly sought after. For university professors, it can also lead to administrative or leadership roles within institutions.

One way that getting a doctorate enhances your impact is by enabling you to contribute to the advancement of knowledge and innovation in your field. Through extensive research and in-depth study, a doctorate equips you with the skills and expertise needed to conduct original research, develop new theories, and make significant contributions to your area of specialization. Your research findings, publications, and insights can have a ripple effect, influencing and shaping the future direction of your field. By pushing the boundaries of knowledge, you can make a lasting impact on your discipline, inspire others, and drive progress in your industry or academic community.

As an academic, I have had the pleasure to impact my students' lives. Seeing them use the skills they learned in class to create better futures for themselves was priceless. Then, being on nonprofit boards and volunteering for business incubation programs to share expertise is another way to create impact. Finally, speaking at conferences, summits, and podcasts to share expertise can spark ideas to create impact.

In the realm of Brazilian higher education, a doctoral degree amplifies your potential impact. Think of it as having a louder microphone in a vast auditorium. As a doctorate holder, you have the credentials to influence educational policies, shape curricula, and mentor the next generation of scholars. Additionally, your research can contribute significantly to your field, driving innovation and influencing societal changes.

The research work should not be calculated just by the 'impact factor' of the work, but the 'impact' it actually creates. Not limiting the research work to publications, and taking it to the next level by patent, technology transfer and real life applications make it more useful.

Let me talk shortly about my case which is rather specific: doing a PhD, which is a relentless critical analysis of topics avoided or swept under the carpet, in a strongly anti-intellectual setting (of Slovenia), does not lead you to an improved material situation, but just the opposite: to a crash in status, a deprived existence and an exile (I live in France now). What I did for my PhD was my greatest pleasure, and giving students the tools to think critically was also just the same. We loved to work together, we made mutual progress. But our small, pocket-sized native country said NO! in a brutal way (university purge, lies about our work etc.) to our shared enthusiasm and to our pushing the boundaries of the known further.

Having worked with hundreds of doc students I think more attention during the doc program selection process should be on how the program gets students out. I've seen a lot of programs that advertise being flexible for the working student but don't mention their ineffectiveness of supporting them through the dissertation process at the end. Students interested in doc programs should reach out to recent grads and/others who have not finish if possible to get an understanding of the entire program experience.

I became, through the process of my doctoral programs, a lifelong learner, and one who deeply loves higher education. It prepared me well, and I am forever grateful to those who helped me along my journey. I am trying to pay it back every single day!

As a professor for 35 years, a doctorate degree increases my earning potential at my current schools and provides me with options at other colleges and universities. As a professional, I have learned much while pursuing my doctorate, and I feel it gives me more authority when I speak. People tend to listen to the doctors.

Support through a doctoral program is critical to success. It starts at home. Ensure that you have the support to dedicate the time and effort needed to complete the program. Next is the school's support towards ensuring your complete. Lastly, is the social network of fellow doctoral students and candidates. For me, it was this last group that helped make it happen. They were the cheering section that continues to help other students through the process.

Completing a doctorate is hard... I will say it has been the most challening thing in my life and will probably remain as that. I've heard other say the same. Its demanding, time consuming, difficult, and will give you lots of sleepless nights... but i couldn't do my job without it. That is what will make it all worth while in the end. Plus it is a huge achievement to be insanely proud of ????

It is a common fallacy to think that obtaining a Ph.D. prepares you to be an effective, successful professor. To be a successful professor, you will need to be able to do the following things that most students receive training for during their Ph.D.: conduct research. You will also need to do the following things that are not always taught during your Ph.D: write grants, manage budgets, teach classes, advise students, write letters of recommendation, and navigate institutional/college/departmental politics and policies. These can be deal breakers if you do not find the right people to mentor you through the transition. Reach out to your colleagues in your professional societies and ask them to give you thoughtful, actionable feedback.

I am currently an academic. A doctoral degree is considered a basic qualification for career progression in academia. However, I have also worked for more than a decade in the corporate world after completing my Ph.D. In my experience, having a doctorate in a subject relevant to my work was really helpful on a day-to-day basis and overall for my career growth, both in terms of expertise and stakeholder perception. This was also true for my colleagues who also had doctoral degrees. A Ph.D. is not everyone's cup of tea, but those who are able to use it effectively benefit a lot from it.
