How can design be used to create more inclusive communities?

Inclusive design in the office space is important to attract a diverse workforce, thereby creating more opportunities for the community as a whole. We can talk about accommodating physical (dis)abilities, by providing the right infrastructure. Equally, it's just as important to think of neurodiversity and provide various spaces where people get stimulated in different ways, in order to optimise their concentration and creativity. How about focus spaces for those who need more individual time or co-work spaces for those who thrive in a bustling environment?

Design plays a crucial role in fostering inclusive communities by prioritizing accessibility and diversity. Urban planning that incorporates accessible infrastructure, like ramps and wide sidewalks, ensures inclusivity for people with disabilities. In architecture, creating spaces with varied cultural influences promotes a sense of belonging for diverse communities. In digital design, ensuring websites and applications are user-friendly for individuals with different abilities enhances inclusivity. Additionally, incorporating green spaces and communal areas in urban design encourages social interaction among diverse groups.

Inclusive design is not just a technical concept. It is also a thought of making things accessible without barring any individual basis their age, gender, orientation or background. Also, inclusive design is not just meant around the access to a system but also enabling full usability of the ecosystem.

An example of what a good inclusive design can look like is 'tactile pavements' Japan invented this to help people with visual disabilities. The poppy surface helps them identify sudden changes in the patterns of the road. But now, with increasing distraction by cell phone while walking, a lot of distracted walkers can be alerted with this design. While in the designing phase it is very important to have inclusivity goals defined in the initial phase itself and not wait until progression as this can make the design non disruptive and can raise adaptability concerns

It is difficult for anyone to apply an inclusive design to a community project as it is a very long and tedious process with many stakeholders in it. After obtaining the problems and definitions from the shareholders, research needs to be conducted and both qualitative and quantitative methods must be applied to generate diverse solutions After having all the alternatives, stakeholders need to validate them and then we can obtain the most suitable design of the project which is inclusive (flexible and can be changed easily).

In order to apply inclusive design, it is essential for the people working on the project to examine their own pre-existing biases and understand what "inclusive" actually means for the community. For example, when considering disability, understanding the whole spectrum of visible/invisible disabilities and why their designs might pose a barrier.

Fortunately, in Germany we have the respective state building regulations, which stipulate that structures that are publicly accessible and structures for old people, people with small children and people with disabilities must be barrier-free to the extent necessary.

Ein tolles Beispiel für Inklusion ist für mich das niederl?ndisch Projekt "Hogeweyk". Auf diesem "Campus", werden Demenzerkrankte in ein normales Leben "zurück integriert". Denn auch Demenz schlie?t oft aus. As most people immediately think of visible disabilities when it comes to inclusive design, I want to focus on the invisible disabilities and general social inclusion. Some examples (in non-particular order) are reserving a "quiet space" at events for people with sensory processing disorders, hosting trainings on inclusive behaviors, having a non-judgmental system in place for those who want help in any way when engaging in community activities, sliding price scales or pay-it-forward programs or awareness raising events such as a human library. It is complex, hard work but the benefits usually exceed the challenges that community coordinators have to overcome.

Applying these principles to design in general requires the active inclusion of different perspectives. En mi experiencia, para el dise?o inclusivo de proyectos, productos o servicios es importante iniciar por hacer un trabajo interno de identificación de sesgos y barreras en los equipos de la organización. La inclusión tiene mucho que ver con los paradigmas culturales que hemos creado en los procesos de socialización de los seres humanos. Llevar a la conciencia de los equipos de trabajo las barreras y sesgos que tenemos, nos asegura pensar de manera incluyente y entender las necesidades de todos los usuarios. También es fundamental para tener éxito en estos proyectos, asegurarse de que tienen un impacto directo en el negocio de la organización. No es solo tener el interés de ser inclusivos, sino que sean iniciativas que son sostenibles.
