How can DCS for water treatment boost operations?

Although I do believe many aspects: Historian, Reporting and other tools can be hosted in the cloud, I find it hard to believe that an entire DCS would be hosted in the Cloud today. We are talking about a Distributed Control System if a connection is lost to the cloud how does control take place. A Hybrid design would be a much safer solution. You think Y2K was an issue....

As similarly pointed out, a cloud-based DCS alone is not a viable option for a water treatment plant. It can co-exist or integrate stand-alone fully automated sub-processes in a water treatment plant. The cost of such a DCS is also a concern and only be justified by the size, distance and complexity of the WTP. WTP might be a non-critical sub-system in many plants, this is where it could be safe to integrate using a cloud-based DCS. Multiple such plants can be hence automated and operated using such DCSs.

With the increase in size and distance of various subsystems within a system, it has been justifiable to adopt wireless DCSs. But it's important to have sub-systems to be fully automated and stand alone capable so that a communication mishap may not adverly effect the system. DCSs could be used for integtion operation in such cases. For example a water pump house located 2 or more kilometers away from the water treatment plant. Or other plants where static electricity might be an issue or cables can't be laid. As the pricees are decreasing and reliability is increasing in wireless sensor we see the move towards wireless DCSs a growing reality.

Wireless DCS further contributes to operational excellence by eliminating the constraints of traditional wired systems. In practical terms, this means quicker deployment and flexibility in sensor placement.
