How can Cybersecurity professionals thrive in the private sector?

Learn business and how to articulate how your cybersecurity skills can help grow the bottom line. You can be the best technician in the universe, but if you can't explain to employers how you can help their business grow with your skills, you bring no value to the table.

In order to know your value you must believe in yourself. Anyone that has integrity, and is teammate, communicator, and a lifelong learner has the ability to help an organization under go positive transformative change. It takes time and one must have patience to learn and understand the culture and apply the Kotter Model (Everyone benefits from quick wins)

I remember being the 5th Information Security Manager in 5 years at one organization. When I came in and dove into things it was easy to see why. As a result a made our Team Goal the following: We are here to SUPPORT THE BUSINESS in the most secure manner possible. You have to understand your job is to support the business.

One major thing I have learned is cultivating soft skills can help balance what ever Technical or industry knowledge you have accumulated. At times in my career my soft skills often granted me access to roles that I may not have gotten with technical knowledge alone.Those soft skills have given me confidence to go after roles that I would normally wouldn’t go after if maybe I lacked the experience or knowledge but I had the motivation and drive to do it. I said that all to say, your value in cybersecurity isn’t tied to your technical knowledge or prowess. Your value comes from the type of professional you are and how you integrate with other professionals. You can land a job with credentials and knowledge but can you keep it?

Stay on top of the latest in cybersecurity by continuously learning and improving your technical skills, understanding new security tools. Communicate complex cybersecurity concepts in simple terms. Foster teamwork by collaborating with others and sharing your knowledge, as cybersecurity is a collective effort. Develop strong problem-solving abilities to navigate the ever-evolving challenges in the field. Uphold ethical practices to build trust, and consider obtaining certifications to showcase your expertise. Be adaptable and ready for change, as cybersecurity threats evolve rapidly. Build a professional network by attending industry events and connecting with peers. Embrace a mindset of continuous learning.

Cybersecurity is a lifestyle just like being a cowboy. You have to live and breathe cybersecurity to stay on top of emerging threats. You also have to know how to leverage your knowledge of emerging threats to protect your stakeholders. Knowledge alone is not power; knowing how to apply that knowledge is the true power!

I think cyber security guys needs to update their skill consistently and create awareness among others as well. Learn new skills regularly

In my experience, persons who do not stay up to date become less effective at protecting, detecting, and responding to cyber threats. An example of the benefits of staying up to date is the importance of doing so for vulnerability management. If a person lapses and does not stay up to date with these vulnerabilities, the company becomes more susceptible to certain exploits.

You have to network, join organizations and attend conferences to stay on top of things. However, doing so brings value to the organization as well as yourself. You also have to be a teacher, coach and mentor to everyone. Information security depends on everyone participating.

This is where being a life long learner plays huge dividends. *Continuous education and certifications *Joining IT groups such as ISACA, CDSE *Blogging and writing article that help inform and educate the industry at large. *Teaching and volunteering your services to grow and educate the community.

A successful career in cybersecurity in the private sector requires you to deal with change. Your team will change, your role, your client's priorities, and even your own organization's priorities will change. If you are too attached to the outcomes you are going to be disappointed when things don't go as planned and they almost never do. You can't control outcomes, but you can control what you are doing, learning, and contributing. Learn as you go because even if the final outcome isn't what you had planned for, you will have new skills to take into the next role or project. Seek to understand when things change, be the person who adds value, and learn to be flexible.

We have to also be able to implement everything we have picked up along the way and ADAPT it to the new environments we find ourselves. This can really make the difference than just coping with the blending in.

As they say in the DevOps world, you have to be agile. Threats are dynamic and so are the needs of your customers. So you must be agile to protect your customers and be willing and ready to pivot on the dime. Stay paranoid, don't get comfortable, and don't live on an island. Communicate with your stakeholders often so you know how to adjust to their needs.

One must wear multiple hats in cybersecurity it’s not only about the technology, but it’s about helping people get to yes by following administrative, technical, and physical controls. We also have grace and patience and understand our team’s strengths and weaknesses. Understanding the culture, and organizations business strategy is key in determining how to obtain resources from senior management.

Bring a "learning" mindset. We are taught to have all the answers. In the real world, that is silly. You, and I, hardly know anything; we want people to share information so that we can collaboratively create the best solution for the situation we are in, which while sometimes can be repeatable, often is unique to that circumstance.

The network effect in the cybersecurity industry is critical. It's a small world and there are many jobs and opportunities out there for those that can find and make their way to them. And this is done via networking. Get out of your comfort zone, join industry groups, attend events, contribute to blogs and various community content activities, help others where possible, and mentor where you can. You'll find that opportunities come much faster when you have broad and positive exposure to the larger community. What goes around comes around.

Having a strong network is incredibly important to your success. You have two different networks, those you meet at a conference or online and never see again or speak much with and those you get to know well, who you trust and go to for help and advice. Both segments of your network will help you learn and grow. They can help you when you're looking for your next role or promotion. Your network will also be where you find partners to speak with at events or invite you to join boards, committees, and other initiatives. All of this comes with building your network, getting to know them, and adding value. Don't forget that you are to your network as they are to you, a person to help others and be supportive.

Networking is about giving more than receiving and for that reason it takes discipline. You give your time to participate in security events and get to know other professionals. You give your listening ear to hear their story. The returns you receive from networking can be delayed, but if professional relationships are nurtured properly, people are more likely to refer, recommend, or hire you when you really need it.

To add what @sharon pole and @javan nisbett have said, you are only as valuable as your network. Actively building relationships with allow you access to better opportunities, events, and experiences. With a health network you can hire people, find jobs, and solve problems, making you insanely valuable to employers.

Feedback can be hard to hear, so often we don't seek it out. But the only way to improve how we show up, participate, add value, and contribute is by knowing how others perceive you and your actions. Most people are going to talk about you to others before they are going to give you direct feedback. If you want to really know how you are showing up for others you need to seek out the feedback. Not only from those you know are going to be kind, but also from those who may have harsher criticisms for you. Learn to discern what matters and what doesn't and don't take it personally; use it to learn and grow. Remember, when someone asks you for feedback to give the good along with the areas of improvement and help someone else on their journey.

Start by identifying specific skills or aspects of your work that you want to improve. Choose an appropriate moment to request feedback, avoiding times when the person you're asking is likely to be busy or preoccupied. Prepare thoughtful questions that address your unique situation and aim to gain insights into your strengths and areas for improvement. Take notes on key points, and view these notes as a valuable tool for self-improvement. Carefully reflect on the feedback you receive to develop a plan for specific improvements. Express gratitude to the person who provided feedback for their time and insights. Regularly seek feedback from colleagues, mentors, and others.

This cybersecurity journey is a life of never-ending education. You will need to master at least one cybersecurity domain and learn other domains to be effective in your role. You also need to learn about multiple domains so you can communicate with team members that are gurus in their cybersecurity domains to have effective collaboration and keep the bad actors out.

Continuous learning is the most important thing today, not only in Cybersecurity but especially in this field. Things are changing very fast and we must be able to follow all trends and increase knowledge and experience. There are new advanced attack vectors and threats and we must be capable to fight them back and defend our systems and networks.

One of the best ways to succeed in this sector is to keep sharing the knowledge you have gained via your continuous learnings. Like they say sharing is caring! Because sharing your knowledge spreads your horizons and eventually helps you learn and grow further.

An area I found many of my peer CISOs struggled in is trying to check boxes. Information Security is not about checking boxes. It is about doing the right things for your business to secure it as best as possible. It is about looking for win win situations with the business. Most importantly it is about knowing and engaging the business.
