“Accidents can become beautiful accents.” This affirmation applies to art and other forms of work. In many cases, if small and early mistakes are caught or acknowledged, they are actually learning opportunities or the impetus for innovation. When a person’s mistake is actually destructive or detrimental, as a supervisor, initially I think about the inadequacy of the process or system they were onboarded (or not onboarded) to follow. There is a misconception that creatives and innovators are more spontaneous than process oriented. Far from the truth. So take the time to analyze the process that led to the mistake. When we can correct form and process, we can decrease mistakes and increase a person’s capacity to do good work.
