1 What is cradle to cradle design?

Cradle to cradle design is a term coined by architect William McDonough and chemist Michael Braungart in their 2002 book Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things. It is based on the idea that human-made products and buildings should be designed as biological or technical nutrients that can be safely and endlessly recycled or composted. Cradle to cradle design follows five principles: use renewable energy, protect water quality, celebrate diversity, respect human and natural systems, and optimize material health and reutilization.

Building adaptable structures is crucial to the reducing waste and emissions in our built environment. However, we must make every effort and prioritise adapting and reusing existing structures wherever possible. Not only to retain the existing embodied carbon (and other toxins) of the structures but to negate further resource consumption through their demolition - demolition is often referred to as Scorched Earth. Adapting existing buildings safely to enhance energy efficiency presents unique challenges often demanding bespoke solutions, so specialist expertise is required. Even if a building is hundreds of years old, it should only be demolished as a last resort if there is no viable alternative to adapting and reusing it.

Consider the variety and types of materials used to construct your home. Consider that each of those thousands of pieces has been manufactured from a raw material source, be it sand, ore, stone, wood, fossil oil. Consider how each piece represents an evolution of form through mechanical or chemical processes that has consumed additional resources and energy. Consider how each piece has been transported and eventually arrived to become part of your home. Now, imagine demolishing it and think what pieces would biodegrade back into the earth. Each building is a store of natural resources and energy. Rethink demolition! Deconstruct, salvage and reuse. Adapt a building that already exists with its own resources before adding more. Not difficult.
