How can conflict resolution improve your brand as an entrepreneur?

One thing I have found helpful in understanding how conflict resolution can improve your brand as an entrepreneur is to see it as an opportunity to demonstrate leadership and values. Effectively managing and resolving conflicts, whether with customers, partners, or within the team, can enhance your reputation for fairness and problem-solving. For example, I've seen an entrepreneur handle a public customer service issue with transparency and prompt resolution, which not only solved the immediate problem but also positively impacted the brand's image for being customer-centric and responsive.

Conflict resolution refers to the process of resolving a dispute or a conflict by providing an amicable solution that ideally satisfies all parties involved. It involves identifying and addressing the underlying issues that led to the conflict, in a way that is constructive and beneficial for all parties. Here are the key elements of conflict resolution: Identification of the Conflict: The first step is to understand the nature of the conflict, the parties involved, and their respective viewpoints and concerns. Open Communication: Encouraging open and honest dialogue between the conflicting parties is crucial.

Problem-solving: The process includes brainstorming potential solutions, evaluating their pros and cons, and agreeing on a course of action that addresses the concerns of all parties. Negotiation: This involves the parties in the conflict coming together to discuss and negotiate a solution. Effective negotiation is about finding a balance between the needs and wants of all involved. Mediation or Arbitration: In some cases, a neutral third party (a mediator or arbitrator) may be involved to facilitate the resolution process. Mediation involves helping the parties reach a consensus, while arbitration involves making a decision for the parties.

Pick up the phone Pick up the phone and have a conversation. If you can, meet with them in-person. I struggle with this sometimes (more than others) but try to listen more than you speak. This works in so many situations. Time to response and getting on the phone have a correlation to the outcome and that customer sticking around.

Listen Actively, Empathize, Learn and Improve, Document the Conflict, esolving conflicts with customers is not just about fixing a single issue. It’s about building a long-term relationship and trust, which can turn a dissatisfied customer into a loyal advocate for your brand.

I’ve developed a mental model and belief that helps me around this. It’s quite simple — “I eat sh*t for breakfast”. I ask myself every day if there is anything difficult I am avoiding (and I hate conflict). But what is worse than a small conflict today is conflict avoided, because it compounds. And then it’s about more than just a little sh*t, it’s a real problem and potentially morphs into an existential threat. You must protect your business and mission and that often means embracing conflict. I also utilize frameworks from the book “Crucial Conversations”. In short, create the space, ask the questions, and embrace the conflict.
