First step in any network design plan is to come up with a prototype using pen and paper. Then when satisfied your physical ptototype is viable, model traffic over your prototype. Identify components all through the 4 layer OSI model. Firewalls, routers and switches, TCP ports and TCP metrics, Application performance etc. Only then you can make an informed decision to put the prototype into production or pre production.
