How can community service programs create transformative experiences?

Many of us choose goals that are acceptable and praised by the world at large. It might be going to a certain school, getting a certain job, or buying a house or a fancy car. Sometimes these goals are tied to what we want to do in the community. Maybe your goal is totally mismatched to your real desires or tempera- ment. It took three months at McDonald’s for me to realize that it was not for me. The bottom line of making someone else rich wasn’t always a big motivator for me to start with. Not working with the community seemed unfulfilling and dry day in and day out. Pick goals that match your interests and abilities, but most importantly, pick goals that excite you.

Its important for the sake of team morale and your own self-care in the work place to stop breath and celebrate what you and your team have accomplished.Point out the member on the team who lead, went the extra mile or contribute an idea outside the box that was successful. Also recognized your achivement and leave in imprint by making sure you record and document how that success was achieved.

Invest in the people doing the work. That can look like professional development opportunities, mentorship, better pay, more flexible scheduling, or technology. Or even better, something identified by your team as an accelerator.

Create a vision board for your goals. This is power- ful! Instead of using Pinterest, do it the old-fashioned way. Get your scissors and clip some images and words from magazines.Tape these to a poster board or pin them to cardboard and place it in a special environment for extra motivation for your goals. I keep mine right on my bookshelf next to my desk at home. I have no choice but to see it every single day to remind me of the amazingness I’m striving for. Do not overlook the power of a vision board and the energy it creates when you need to be inspired or reminded of the greatness you’re meant for.
