In my opinion, in the sustainable architecture sector, Architecture events let people see and talk about new and exciting ideas for making buildings and cities more sustainable and inclusive. They can make people more interested and supportive of planning projects by: Teaching them why and how to make places that are easier, safer, and more enjoyable for everyone to live in. Inviting and encouraging different groups of people, like residents, experts, leaders, and money-makers, to work together and make their urban solutions. Showing them examples and stories of what other people have done or are doing to improve architecture and urban planning, and giving them ideas for the future.

Community engagement is crucial for building support for inclusive planning initiatives. Here are some ways community engagement can foster inclusivity: 1. Diverse Representation 2. It's a dynamic exchange that not only enhances the quality of outcomes but also nurtures a sense of shared responsibility for the well-being of the community. Addressing challenges and fostering understanding through this collaborative approach strengthens the foundation for sustainable and equitable development.

At its core, community engagement is meant to be a way for everyone to have their say in relation to a project that might impact them. If people don't know about a project (due to inadequate or inaccessible community engagement techniques) then a project is potentially missing out on innovative ideas to be more equitable, engaging, safe, inspiring and responsive to the niche needs of a specific area.

Certain sections of the community are sceptical of government interventions due to historical reasons of how the previous interventions went or neglect by the government. It is important to sit down with such sections, have focus group discussions, understand their story, and bring them onboard.

To overcome these challenges, planners must adopt a strategic and adaptive approach to community engagement. Clear communication of purpose, scope, and objectives is foundational, coupled with selecting methods tailored to the unique context and goals. Establishing trust through cultural sensitivity and valuing community input is paramount. Offering incentives and recognition ensures participants find value in their involvement. Au Sénégal, dans le cadre de la formation de ces étudiants, l'école supérieure d'economie appliquée (ESEA) envoie ces derniers en stage pratique dans le but de leur faire réaliser des plans d'aménagement et de developpement de terroirs (PADT). Dans cet exercice, il est demandé aux etudiants d'organiser des séances de partage après collecte des données, avec les personnes ressources de la localité (conseillers municipaux, chefs religieux et /ou coutumiers) pour une meilleure prise en compte de leurs préoccupations dans la planification de leur commune. As community engagement approaches evolve, opportunities to increase the breadth of voices grow as well. While I've seen this play out in many ways, the most impactful way to broaden the reach of engagement efforts, that I have yet seen, is to work with trusted community partners to distribute information, survey links, or invitations.
