How do I measure my business cash flow... There is not much at this time so it is pretty easy peasy... yet my salary has been not part of the equation till this Year, and is still not enough to live on. Key focus areas: 1) Have clear processes to ensure your customers pay you on time. Promptly follow up any overdue client debts. 2) Have clear processes to review, approve and pay your suppliers on time. Pay, in this order: a) IRD taxes (PAYE, GST and Provisional tax) b) Your staff c) Your suppliers, including your financiers. d) Yourself, last. 3) Ensure that you inventory, work in progress, and debtors are carefully managed. 4) Reconcile your Balance Sheet accounts monthly. You cannot know if your Profit and Loss is correctly stated, if you cannot prove your Balance sheet. This is huge. 5) Implement an Advisory Board governance process, to both focus on key business decisions monthly, and hold yourself and your owners accountable.

The strength of a chain is equal to the strength of its weakest link. To increase the strength of the chain, you need to find the weakest link and increase its strength. Every business produces several outputs. One of them is Cash. The others are Profit, Satisfaction, Valuation, Sales and so on. The amount of Cash the business produces is governed by its own unique bottleneck. The trick is to find this one key bottleneck and to figure out how to break it or how to exploit it to increase the throughput of Cash. This begins to take the guesswork out of the equation and start to apply laws of physics to increase Cash Flow.

It is easy to become too technical. The approach that works best for my clients is: 1) As explained above, prove the accuracy of your Balance Sheet and Profit and Loss statement. 2) Ensure that your Balance Sheet is tidy, and well managed. 3) Generate positive free cashflow, and as a result, build the strength of your Balance Sheet via increasing the % of Equity Vs Total Assets. 4) Use points 1-3 to grow your business, both orgnically, and via strategic aquistions, which add to the core value proposition of your business.
