In thinking about the challenges of flipped learning, and other technology driven approaches, consider broader social, political and economic issues, as well as the immediate educational and logistical challenges. A starting point for a 'sociotechnical' perspective is to consider how a technology is not neutral and not experienced in the same way for everyone. For example, how does the experience of a student who has their own laptop, own private room, good internet connection, etc., compare with the experience of a student who shares a bedroom with siblings, doesn't own a laptop, and has caring or work responsibilities outside school hours? To ensure the sustainability of blended and flipped learning models, educators need to implement strategies that will help them to tackle the challenges and maximize the advantages. This includes aligning the online and face-to-face components with the learning objectives, outcomes, and standards, as well as designing them to reinforce each other through a variety of methods and media. Assessing the components by using both formative and summative tools is essential for measuring and monitoring learning progress and performance. Furthermore, it is important to communicate expectations, instructions, and feedback for both components clearly and often. Engaging learners in the online and face-to-face components by providing relevant, meaningful, and interactive content and activities is also key. Offering guidance, scaffolding, and differentiation will support learners in their learning journey, while collecting data, feedback, and reflections from both components will help in evaluating them and making adjustments as needed.

4 Examples of sustainable models

There are many examples of blended and flipped learning models that have been successfully implemented and sustained in different educational contexts and levels. The Station Rotation model involves learners rotating between stations in the classroom, one of which is an online station. The Lab Rotation model has learners alternating between a classroom and a computer lab, where they access online content. For the Flipped Classroom model, learners access online content before the class, and use the class time for discussions, projects, or problem-solving. The Flex model allows learners to customize their schedule to choose when and where to access online content, as well as meet with the teacher whenever needed. Finally, the Enriched Virtual model has learners completing most of their work online, while meeting with the teacher face-to-face occasionally.

There are several possible solutions for designing the first part of a flipped classroom model, the one that precedes the group discussion with the teacher, such as: 1) Provide learners with a set of digital resources by asking them to study them in the order they deem most relevant 2) Simply ask them to study a complete version of the course, scripted in detail 3) Use a problem-based approach where they are presented with a problem and it is up to them to identify the resources they need to solve it For my part, I mainly use the second, which allows during the group discussion, to complete the online course with explanations in response to the questions that the students have.
