1 What are API keys?

API keys are unique identifiers that are assigned to each user or application that wants to access an API. They are usually generated by the API provider and sent to the API consumer, who then has to include the API key in every request to the API. The API provider can then verify the identity and permissions of the API consumer based on the API key, and grant or deny access accordingly. API keys can also be used to track and limit the usage of the API, such as the number of requests, the bandwidth, or the data volume.

I would just add these points from mine perspective, 1. The use of API key can be easily integrated with other technique (s) such as using CORS headers, to help provide robust security. 2. It can make seamless the efforts of the developers to monetize their invention through use of API keys which may be typically obtained after thorough authentication and access to some premium features that must be paid for beforehand.

2 How to generate and store API keys?

When generating and storing API keys, there are multiple methods to consider, such as using a random string generator like UUID, a hash function like SHA-256, a cryptographic algorithm like RSA, or a third-party service like Firebase or Auth0. Regardless of the method chosen, API keys should always be stored securely and encrypted on both the API provider's and consumer's side. For the API provider, this means storing the keys in a database or key vault, while for the consumer this means storing the keys in a configuration file or environment variable. It is important to never expose API keys in plain text, such as in source code, URLs, or browsers.

It is imperative not to re-invent the wheel by creating your own algorithm for creating API keys. There are many ways an API key can be created insecurely or cause collisions. Therefore, it is best to rely on tried-and-tested solutions such as oAuth, JWT, or a third-party solution such as AWS provides. This greatly reduces security risks.

3 How to send and receive API keys?

There are various methods to send and receive API keys, depending on the protocol and format of the API. For instance, the query string appends the API key to the URL of the request, while the header adds it to the HTTP header of the request. Additionally, the body includes it in the HTTP body of the request, and the cookie stores it in a browser cookie and sends it with every request. The API provider should indicate how to send the API key and validate/verify it, and then respond with an appropriate status code and message. Therefore, it's important for the API consumer to follow instructions accordingly.

Simple API keys also have no access control. There is no way to restrict access to specific permissions or views using a simple API key.
