In my experience, using the AO is a crucial part of animation rendering specially when your lighting scenario is daylight or exposed to high intensity source of light. The AO really helps 3d objects in the scene to be separated and distinguished alongside of the other 3d objects and make the edges, cracks, intricate details and even the Normal map details so recognizable in a still image or animation rendering. Vray for example gives you lots of possibilities to take advantage of AO. You can easily add it globally to your light calculation. Or you use it in shaders to edit or mix the appearance.
It depends on the software you use, for example, I have used AO in 3DS Max and Vray renderer just by activating it and setting the amount in Vray settings, and for the Blender animations I used both AO node adding to shaders and activating the AO option in render settings.
