In analyzing a process you typically trace an object through the various process steps. For example: a customer order undergoes different administrative steps before it becomes a delivery. Mapping this process with all its peculiarities is already quite an undertaking, let alone if you want to map an entire process end to end. For example: from order intake to shipment to invoicing. 'Traditional' process mining aids in discovering a single process, and the new kid on the block is Object Centric Process Mining, which allows you to discover that entire end to end process, where an order becomes a shipment and then an invoice.

Typically, process mining focuses on the analysis of internal data. Process data, enriched with other internal data such as product or customer. This inherently limits the reach of root cause analysis to internal factors only, which can lead to suboptimal resolutions or worse, wrong decisions. Adding data about external factors allows you to find correlations, and maybe even causations, with internal process performance issues. Is the incline of your Days Payables Outstanding due to your staff not following policies or to high inflation? This in turn can inform ML models that provide early warnings or predictions of process outcomes, given the occurence of these correlated or causal events outside your organisation.

3 Providing process insights

AI and ML can also help you gain more insights into your processes, by applying advanced analytics and visualization techniques to your process data and models. For example, you can use AI and ML to discover patterns, correlations, or anomalies in your processes, to measure and monitor your process performance and quality, to identify root causes of problems or inefficiencies, and to generate recommendations or suggestions for improvement. These insights can help you understand your processes better, and communicate and collaborate more effectively with your stakeholders, such as customers, suppliers, or managers.

4 Enabling process adaptation

Finally, AI and ML can enable you to adapt your processes more easily and dynamically, by leveraging their self-learning and self-optimizing capabilities. AI and ML can monitor your processes in real-time, and detect and respond to changes in your environment, such as customer preferences, competitor actions, or regulatory requirements. They can also learn from your feedback and actions, and adjust your processes accordingly. This can help you create more agile, flexible, and resilient processes, that can cope with uncertainty and complexity, and deliver value to your customers and business.
