How can AI-generated images be used to improve healthcare?

GenAI Might be used to combine multiple imaging techniques. Let's take different tests done on a patient with the relevant image on that (MRI, CT, PET, etc.). What if GenAI might help visualize the patient as a whole, where it combines the different tests and give an overall perspective of the patient? Doing it manually, without the use of GenAI might be time consuming.

Image Synthesis does come with risks and challenges that should be carefully considered. If the generated images are not sufficiently realistic or reflect biases in the training data, they may undermine model performance when applied in real clinical settings. Rigorous testing and evaluation processes are necessary. There are also ethical concerns if synthesized images can be misused or patrons are unaware they are simulated. The data used to train models may also unintentionally encode and amplify societal biases around factors like race, gender and age. Those developing and deploying these technologies should adopt best practices around transparency, auditing and mitigation of unfair biases.

I believe that one area where AI-generated images can improve healthcare is in assisting doctors and patients in visualizing a future state, perhaps after an invasive procedure to give the patient a better idea of a type of scarring they might expect. Or possibly for cosmetic or reconstructive surgery to help visualize how a patient might end up looking in the future. AI-generated images might also help with medical note-taking to help create visual representations of a doctor's or nurse's notes or mapping those notes to areas on the human anatomy.

The biggest thing for Images I think is to view the trend over time - which has issues beyond AI today (i.e. interoperability). But imagine a timeline view that showcases a series of lung images, each representing a different point in time in a COPD patient. AI can overlay these images, highlighting areas of concern and depicting the evolution of the disease. This visual timeline can serve as a comprehensive record of the patient's COPD progression, almost like an AI SOAP note for images!

Image registration is necessary for more reliable diagnosis and rapid capture of commonalities to further more efficient recommendations. I think of registration as aggregating and transforming data into a referential system. It is important to register the various features, angles and meanings. Let's take optometry as an example. Our eyes are unique therefore the use of AI powered image registration is critical for establishing baselines and to rapidly detect change at registered points in time, diagnosing issues and preventing loss and impairments. AI will pattern and feature match images, and categorize in depth objects that are needed in healthcare to anchor diagnosis. Just remember to keep humans in command of final actions.

While that is a great starting point, I think the use of AI - a combination of image patterns recognition, NLP and ML interpretive methods can lend itself to a range of use cases from a recommendation of wound treatment approaches in an ER to a scaled down consumer mobile device camera image generating recommendations on whether to go to the ER, seek urgent care or handle with first aid/home treatments and watch for complications. As an example, BARDA awarded a contract to Spectral AI to deploy such technology in ERs where the image of a burn wound would be used to determine whether surgery is needed to optimize healing.

In my opinion, one of the applications of AI can be through image analysis (X-ray, Ultrasound, MRI or a combination of them) to generate a diagnostic findings in writen format understandable to medical experts. The system could give a precise description of the diagnosis and if it has enough data potentially to propose therapy. Also, it can request additional data, (recording from another angle, or other technology) or medical information of a different nature in order to complete diagnosis and potential therapy.

With the advent of improved GAN architectures for domain specific applications like medical image-to-image translations, intelligent downstream tasks can be achieved with confidence. Think of a patient with metallic implant (like a pacemaker), who may not be suitable for an MRI procedure but can undergo a less invasive procedure like CT scan. With an enhanced GAN architecture that can better translate CT images to MRI, such a patient can confidently undergo the CT scan and then have the translation model translate the CT scans into an MRI-like version.
